Asking for help on this: Is regional scholastic Silver award in writing helpful in application? Thank you so much!
My Daughter won the silver key as well. We tried to figure out what it meant and we had no luck at all. In one part of the letter it said the ceremony was online and in another part it said in person. Hopefully they will send more info.
My take is that awards are always a good way to support a solid narrative. So sure, if you are presenting yourself as an avid writer, then this will be good evidence to support that. I confess I’m not familiar with this award, so I don’t know if it’s something that is so well-known and prestigious that it will make eyes pop beyond “supporting the narrative.” But in any case, without specific knowledge, I would say awards often help create a clear and compelling profile in the AO’s mind. And then very prestigious awards probably hold water all on their own, not just as “evidence” of a presented narrative.
Yes, these awards in art and writing are very prestigious esp the gold or national awards. They are also impressive for college apps.
For kids who are interested in art and writing they should ask the BS how many awards have been won this year and in previous years. It’s a good indication of the level of art and writing at the school.
Thanks much! After some digging, I got a better understanding on this: so if it’s national, then people call it Medal. If it’s regional, people call it Key. As Happytimes2001 said, think national Medals are really good, regional Keys probably are just supporting the narrative.
You can look up the awards on the web site. There are tens of thousands of applicants and very few receive awards. It’s not an everyone gets a trophy type of program. There are also lots of categories including film; poetry, and more.
