Is RPI worth applying to if you like liberal arts as much as computer science? DS wants to go into cs, but he's also interested in arts and sciences and exploring many different fields, but I don't see a lot of choices for that there. Should he just skip RPI and look elsewhere?

This was our impression as well, but that’s what mine liked- just wants to focus on tech. The CS program at RPI is rigorous; not sure how much time there is for exploration into other fields. I know of several RPI students who are taking extra courses, but they are related to their major. FWIW: Union College encourages engineering students to dual major with a non-engineering field; probably the same for CS. Their CS majors are highly regarded and the college just got a super computer donated from IBM for their undergrad program.

momhippo: The CS program can be completed with plenty of extra courses to spare (esp. if you come in with some AP or transfer credit), but I can’t comment on the quality/quantities of the humanities/arts/soft sciences offerings (besides in psychology and maybe in cognitive science) at RPI.

No. The schools blows. Haha just kidding. CS is legit at RPI, just keep your kid away from IT or the networking academy.
