Is Rural Mississippi a underrepresented region?

Uhm, I’m from Mississippi, like deep South, rural Mississippi ( Stone County ). Would that count as a underrepresented region? Granted I am attending the state’s STEM magnet school now.

It depends upon which school you are targeting.

Not under-represented at Ole Miss or at Mississippi State, but certainly under-represented at NYU, Ivy League schools, any schools on the West Coast and at schools outside of the Deep South.

The real question is does it matter. Most schools publish enrollment by geographic region. Harvard for example has 19.6% from the South. Some schools also like to say they have students from all 50 states. You are evaluated within the context of your HS. Since you go to STEM magnet school, you will be evaluated as a student that attends that type of school. The short answer is that for the well known schools, they likely get a lot of applications from everywhere. A lesser known small school may not get many applications from your area any may have more interest in someone from MS.

Overall, quite underrepresented.

Yes. It’s underrepresented. I would seek out reach schools in the Northeast, for example.
