Is Stanford worth 20K in loans and no grad school help from parents

Thanks for asking.

After a great deal of angst and each family member changing their minds repeatedly -it became clear that Stanford was the right fit for this student.
I have a great deal of respect for our state university. It has given my daughter exposure and support at the college level in her area of interest. My younger daughter also participates in what the university has to offer in an entirely different field. I think, in part, because they have given her so much at such a young age that she is ready to move on to the opportunities and challenges that Stanford provides. She will be an active participant in making Stanford a reality for herself financially as well as academically. As I said in the beginning it makes the entire family active participants in the financial aspect of this choice. It would have be more comfortable for us all if the free ride was taken but there was no peace in that decision. As a family we have met other challenges together and this is another one along the way. We have as much of a plan as one can put together for these things and have a peace about rising to the challenge and all being better for it. We have great confidence in this kid. She is very sensitive to the sacrifice this entails for everyone and I know she will make the most of what lies ahead. We are very happy for her. Best to all!

Congratulations to all of you. All the best to your D at Stanford.

rio, my family situation is near identical and I chose Stanofrd. I will be working too. :)

Just a note of encouragement. My daughter had to make a similar decision last year--different schools, same economics. She went with the more expensive school as well. Who knows? She has been extremely happy with her choice. I have never seen her work and play harder. All courses have been challenging. She also found the idea of going to a school where none of her classmates were going as liberating. I feel like we have always been planning for the future--the future used to be college, not it is graduate of professional or law school. Sometimes it is good to just think about the present--it sure is fun when you are 18 years old to be able to say "I'm going to Stanford!"--might sound shallow, but she deserves it!

Stam,
