I’m a sophomore who is in Spanish 4 honors. I really want to quit the class to make room in my schedule for another AP class. The problem is that my counselors and school have really been pushing the fact that colleges like to see a continuity in a language up to AP. Is this true? Will not continuing Spanish really affect me for college admissions to places like UVA, NYU, etc?
You can look at the colleges’ web sites to find out what they like to see.
Depends what you want to major in too. My engineering daughter dropped Spanish after honors III to make room for more STEM classes. She applied to STEM focused, non liberal arts colleges, so it was a good fit for her.
How are you not ready for AP after 4 years?
I feel ready for AP, but I am interested in other more important AP classes too.
How many years of a language will show upon your HS transcript? DId you take Spanish 1 in 8th gr but it will show up s a HS class? Do you have 3 or 4 years of a language already?
I took spanish 1 and 2 in middle school, took spanish 3 in freshman year, and am now in 4 this year in 10th grade.
What do you want to major in?
And do you want to complete your college foreign language graduation requirement with Spanish or with another language
As other said, unless either of the MS language classes will show up on your HS transcript (sometimes an 8th grade language class will be credited as a HS class), check the colleges that you are currently considering to see what their recommendations/requirements are for the # of years of a language they want to see. If its 11th grade, why not take AP Spanish and other AP classes?
You’re a sophomore. It’s April. Are you seriously going to drop a class this late in the year, or do you just mean that you’d prefer not to take Spanish next year? If the former, don’t even think about it, but if you just don’t want to continue to take it next year, check the colleges you might be interested in to see what they recommend. If you’re looking at very competitive schools, anything they suggest or recommend is really a requirement if you want to be considered for admission.
What kind of colleges do you see yourself targeting? If the more selective colleges are on your list, they’ll want to see more years of a foreign language. Go to a couple college websites and see what they recommend for HS curriculum. Or many schools will list it in section C5 of their Common Data Sets which you can google. Here’s Harvard’s for example which states that 4 years of a foreign language are “recommended” - which I agree is more of a requirement than a recommendation.

It doesn’t matter that you took 1 and 2 in middle school. Spanish 4 counts as level 4, and no college is looking for more than that. The only reason you should consider AP Spanish over other APs is because you might be able to fulfill your college’s foreign language requirement with it.
