Is the Columbia Science Honors Program helpful on college applications?

Hi,

I’m going into my junior year of high school and was recently accepted into the Columbia Science Honors Program. The program requires you to commute to Columbia every Saturday during the school year (commuting there isn’t an issue for me) and attend lectures on campus. I’m just wondering if having this program on my college application will really help me get into a top-tier university. I want to study biology in college and I have a few other science-related extracurricular activities. If anyone has attended this program in the past, I’d really appreciate it if you shared your experience and your opinion. Thanks!

Sure, it’ll look great on your app! It sounds like it complements your overall focus, which is good news. It’ll help your application, but it won’t be a golden ticket in.

DS turned it down to work in a lab at Weill Cornell. College advisor said okay to turn it down because it just showed a kid could do well in school, and they can figure that out other ways. Research shows independence, interest and a much broader range of skills.

A program like this is great if it is something you really want to do, but it will be one of many many things considered in a holistic review of a college application.
