Duke's supplement application says that their supplement essays are "truly optional". So basically the Common App short answer and essay are the only required writings for Duke, right? And how much will it help to write the optional supplement essays (or hurt, if I choose not to)?

the common app is the only essay required if you’re applying to trinity. i believe there’s an extra essay pratt applicants need to write. i applied to trinity and i wrote the optional essay…they say it won’t hurt if you don’t write it, but i mean if you really care that much about duke, why wouldn’t you?

Agree with massgirl. Taking the time to write the optional essay will only show your enthusiasm for Duke. I mean, if you’re not willing to write the optional essay, how can they expect you to go above and beyond what is expected of you when you are on campus?

My son didn’t write any additional essays (Why Duke?) and he was accepted. I think they truly are optional and intended for those who have specific, unique reasons. Perhaps they want to continue research with a specific professor or major in something specific to Duke.
