I'm applying to Carnegie Mellon University. To be specific I'm applying to the engineering college (Carnegie Mellon Institute of Technology).

The commonapp also asks to what department I'm applying to. I put chemical engineering as the department because I did an internship in chemistry and am really interested in it. Although, is this binding? What if I am accepted but I change my mind to mechanical engineering by then? Their website doesn't really address this question and if someone good enlighten me that would be great.

You don’t declare until the end of your 1st year. They just ask you to list it to get a general idea of what the applicants are interested in. (That’s what the interviewer told me)

Except for ECE…I think they want you to specifically put that on CommonApp if you’re interested. (someone should add on to this…)

If you don’t specifically say ECE then two things can happen if you are accepted to CMU.

In your acceptance letter it will say you have been accepted for the following majors and it will include ECE.

In your acceptance letter it will say you have been accepted for all majors but restricted for ECE.

I know from my S who was accepted to all CIT majors (ECE included) even though he had expected to do ChemE. A friend’s S got the ECE restricted acceptance. One thing you have to remember is you will have to take two Intro to ??? Engineering courses during Freshman year. Do well in the Intro to ECE and you will likely be able to select that even if you are restricted from ECE.

BTW - my S will be graduating in May w/BS in ECE.
