Is the Hotel School a Total Joke?

“More students transfer into the Hotel School than out of it, within Cornell. Many of the kids are very smart–valedictorians, AP scholars with distinction, etc., but their work experience might be more important.”

 • I agree with the transfer part
 • I highly disagree with the valedictorian part; Hotelies have among the lowest stats in Cornell
 • However, why does that matter when your school is absolutely amazing and at the top of the field.

Yes, the overall stats are less competitive (and the way HSA presents them shows they don’t really care too much about stats–experience and fit seem to be more important), but there are individuals with high stats/achievements–I don’t know too many students there, but have personal knowledge of a val from a large, competitive northeastern high school, and kids with SATs that exceed the Cornell average admitted stats (710 verbal and 740 math this year). There is a range. The kids with lower stats may be professional chefs or maybe they’ve worked at their family’s hotel/resort since they were 12. (Some of the kids with higher stats are like that too!) Most bring something interesting to the classroom.

Who care what people think of the school when you can graduate with a great job and great connections? Cornell’s business school is highly ranked in the country as well and many people think it’s a joke in Cornell in terms of rigor but who cares? Those are the ppl earning the big bucks in the end.

@inflation
what were your stats and experience?

i also applied for fall 2012 transfer to sha. i haven’t heard a reply yet.
