Is the idea of raising my current SAT score (1420) to a 1600 in 9 months plausible?

I am currently in my sophomore year. I’ve taken various SAT mock tests before, with a majority of them around 1420 (710 R&W 710 Math, yeah ik math score sucks). I was wondering if the idea of raising my current score to a 1600 is plausible in 9 months (when my first SAT test will be). I feel like I have to receive a high SAT score so that I can compensate for my relatively low GPA, largely because I’ve been very lazy so far lol. I’ve heard that an 800 on math can easily be achieved with minimal practice. Btw I’m in an extremely competitive private school with the average 50% SAT around 1450-1530 (with asians being the majority).

Also, I just wanted to know how well I am doing on the SAT relative to my grade. I know that my SAT R&W is pretty high, but I am not so sure about my Math, more so because other kids are just too damn good…

I think it is possible. Score increases of 200 points are not unheard of after an effort is made to practice for the test.

I don’t think, generally speaking, a great score is likely to make up for a poor GPA. It depends on the selectivity of the college, I suppose. A good score is more likely to help get merit aid at a school that is otherwise a likely or match for you, though.

What’s your unweighted GPA? We can’t tell you how you are doing relative to your grades with no information to go on. Does “bad” mean 3.7 in a highly competitive school? Or does bad mean lots of Bs with some lower grades?

As @Groundwork2022 mentioned, an impressive SAT won’t make up for a sub-par GPA. As a sophomore, your time would probably be better spent upping your grades. In addition, improvement in the SAT might follow naturally as time spent in school contributes to higher scores.

1420 is already a decent result and may be consistent with or even higher than what your GPA would suggest.

Your math score may rise naturally with more math completed in HS. Many find the verbal section harder to improve upon.
