is the social scene open to non athletes ?

im not inclined towards athletics... at all. iv heard that williams is a predominantly jock school... so will not being athletic hamper my social life at willimas ? do th epeople at williams accept non athletes into their community ?

70% of Williams students do not play a varsity sport.

I had similar apprehensions about Williams too. I guess it depends on your definition of non-athlete - as jeke wrote, only a small portion of students are actually varsity athletes. That said, a lot (I think the number they tossed around was 60% ish?) of students do participate in some level of sport, like intramural, club, etc. (By the way, there is a four-credit PE requirement) We’re on winter study now, and there’s a lot of nordic/downhill/telemark/snowshoeing going on (you can rent equipment free, and there are a lot of nice trails around), and during the warmer months, I always see people biking and jogging around campus. Williams tends to attract outdoorsy people.

I played a sport competitively in high school but don’t anymore (no team here), and I’ve experienced no schism between people like me and the hard-core varsity athletes. The entry system really helps with bringing people together, and in fact, several of my closest friends play a sport for Williams. Likewise, I do have friends who don’t play a sport or work out regularly, and it’s all cool.

FYI: I’m not an athlete and have never been one and never will be one (haha just the thought…)

It’s shocking how un-athlete-like athletes are here, even varsity athletes. Physically, yeah they look all buff and intimidating. However, many athletes are friendly and “normal” people, not the domineering jock type.

So, YES. Even if you are adamant about not socializing with athletes, there are plenty of interesting people around.

thats nice to know. would one of u mind reading my williams supplement essay ? i think they might feel iv interpreted it wrong…

the social scene at williams is like the social scene at a relatively large (2000 person) high school.
