Is the "Zoomass Slamherst" myth as accurate as people say it is?

I was pretty unaware, until now, that UMass is supposedly a huge party school. How out of control is it? Are some dorms better/worse than others?
I'm somewhat considering UMass, and I'm afraid to go there then end up stuck in a dorm where everyone's just really out of control. I'm not a "nerd", but partying hard isn't my thing.
Thanks.

The Southwest dorms (the tall, apartment-like buildings) have the biggest party rep. Everywhere else in campus seems to be chill. Just remember that there is a party scene at every school you go to, but at the same time, there are people who will never party and people who will party just a few times a semester.

I’m personally not a party person (never even been to a party), but as long as I’m not in SW, I believe that I’ll be comfortable at UMass next year. If you need some info on the other dorms, I’d be more than happy to help you out and put your 24/7 party image to rest.

The wild party days, where UMass got its “party” rep, are largely in the past. My S doesn’t party, he had no trouble finding a similar-mined group to hang out with. He was in NorthEast for freshman year.

If you want to avoid SouthWest, make sure you go to the earliest possible orientation, it increases your chances of getting the dorm you want.
