Is there a difference?

Looking into some colleges for architecture got me thinking - is there a difference in major in architecture at a technical school like Georgia Tech for instance and say a more liberal arts school such as Cornell? Do the curricula lean more towards technical versus artsy or is it pretty much the same across the board?

There is a lot of consistency in architectural coursework among the different schools around the country because they all have to be accredited by a national board. So you are typically going to get the same number of design studios in similar degree programs around the country.

The emphasis in each of the design studios is going to vary depending on the school and some may be more serious and professionally oriented (you design things that look like actual buildings), and some might be more theoretical and abstract. However you cannot determine this just by the nature of the overall institution. A technical school like MIT has historically been way out there in design, so you need to look at each individual program to see their emphasis. Look at the student work they highlight on the website it should start to give you an idea, then go visit the school and ask a lot of questions.
