Is there any chance at all?

I am an African American Student at one of the most competitive public schools in the nation. I want to Major in Political Science (and play soccer) and I wanted to apply at

NYU
UVA
Amherst
Swathmore
UMD
Georgetown
UMiCH
Columbia
Carnegie Mellon
(And then obviously some others that are more plausible)

I really slacked freshman year and got a 2.93, I did a only a little bit better sophmore year with a 3.14 and junior year I have gotten a 3.74. My final Gpa will likely be around a 3.25 UW and Weighted will be around a 3.65.

I got a 2150 on my SATs (first time, I think I am going to take it again and shoot for a 2250...I know easier said than done)

I have taken 5 AP classes
U.S History (Freshmen Year): 3
Gov/Politics (Sophmore Year): 5
Psych AP (Junior): 5
World History(Junior):5
English AP (Junior): 5

My ECs are where I focused a lot of my attention throughout highschool (which may have not been the wisest decision)

-I am a state certified Legal Mediator

What can your family afford?

You need to apply to schools you can get into & actually afford.
Have your parents looked into calculating their EFC on Finaid dot org website or even the Collegeboard website?

My parents are able to afford these schools (although I’d like to help them out financially in anyway possible whether through scholarships or FA) but do you think that I can get into these schools in the first place?

The upward trend of your GPA is good; your standardized test scores are solid - especially all those 5s on AP tests. Those extracurriculars are very good. Although the GPA is overall low, your standardized test scores and minority status mean you’re definitely in at NYU and Swathmore. Columbia and Georgetown are probably the only real reaches.

Thanks for the comment Cookies93! Do you think that I should take the SAT again? And is there anything else I can do to make myself an appealing candidate?

Swarthmore is more selective than GTown- they take <15%.

Does anyone else have some input to share? I could use all the help I can get!

It’s impossible to say because you’re African American. Affirmative Action has completely ruined the college process, so there is no way to tell you.

I would have preferred a more informative answer, but thanks for your input anway HighSchoolDropIn!

Is there anyone else who has some input on my chances in these schools and what I need to do (if there is anything) to make myself a more appealing candidate?

NYU - low reach
UVA - match
Amherst - high match
Swathmore - high match
UMD- low match
Georgetown - match
UMiCH - match
Columbia - high reach
Carnegie Mellon - high match

Your GPA / SAT hurt you. Being URM helps you.

Btw, how does this legal mediator certification thing work?

Do you think that I should take the SATs again and shoot for a 2250-2300?

The legal mediator certification is a 100 hour course you have to take (there are two students selected each year in my county to take the course for free) and there is a local firm/mediation center that I work for that gets cases that were referred to us by the courts (which basically means that it is a case not significant enough or appropriate for court).

The type of mediation I specialize in is Restorative Dialogue/Restorative Reflection (this was another 40 hour course) which is a program where kids who have committed petty crimes or misdomeanors (normally lashing out after years of being bullied) have an opportunity to attend some mediation sessions and to either talk to their victims or meet with a mediator one and one and talk about the incident. By attending this mediation session, they are avoiding going to a juvenille detention center or court.

By the way, Thank you so much for your input!

bump…any more help guys?

Hi.
Not that I know anything about this, but it definitely won’t hurt to retake the SAT. Though it already is high, probably any improvement would help your chances.
The ECs are really impressive, so I can’t help but think that the majority of the colleges will accept you.

Thanks alot! Anymore help?

Take the SAT again, if you have the time.

As for your chances, your GPA will hurt your chances but your URM status will help you a bit.

NYU - Match
UVA - Match
Amherst- Low reach
Swathmore - Low Reach
UMD - no idea
Georgetown - Reach
UMiCH - Low reach (they’ve been deferring SO many qualified applicants)
Columbia - High reach
Carnegie Mellon - Match

I agree with xjudokax for the most part, are you good enough at soccer to get recruited? That could change things alot.

Your SAT scores and EC’s are great but your GPA is just a little low but I think you should be fine

NYU In
UVA In
Amherst Match/Reah
Swathmore In
UMD In
Georgetown ?
UMiCH In

Carnegie Mellon Match

Thanks guys… anymore, i could still use some more feedback
