Is there any effect of Coronavirus in admission?

I am just wondering if there is any effect of Coronavirus in admission.

While I would advise to look through other threads for more information, coronavirus may or may not affect applicants from afflicted areas. However, I don’t believe it will. Depends on how long this lasts…

I think that coronavirus will have an impact on students applying from certain areas because of travel bans and complications with receiving visas from the US.

Probably not but DS was waitlisted at one of his top choices. Had a nice conversation with AO who is also a coach for team(s) DS participates in…regarding Corona virus and waitlist…he said this year in talking with other BS AO no one seems to know how much of an impact the virus will have on who enrolls but all schools he spoke to are anticipating a higher rate of movement off the waitlist when compared to past years.

Without a doubt, it will. I think many of the admitted students from International countries will not be able to commit or attend. Also, some OOS students will choose to stay closer to home. The extra loss of revenue by these two types of students will cause colleges to admit more students from the waitlist and deferred lists. The next month is very important for everyone involved as the concern plays out. A lot of uncertainty for sure. This might not affect schools such as UNC, UGA, or UF since the majority of their student base is In-State. But schools such as UMN, Michigan State, and Purdue could.

Correct. For multiple reasons, though not fear of infection, COVID-19 (plus recent changes to immigration rules around student visas) is already affecting and will continue to affect admission decisions for both colleges and boarding schools.

@Boomer1964 you replied to a thread for boarding school applicants (in the Prep School section of Pre-College). Today, March 10, is the big date where all these kids from the U.S. & from around the world, who are currently mostly 8th-9th graders (but some 10th graders & levels up), received results about their boarding school admissions (to enter private high school). It’s a different dynamic than college, but there some here wondering if at this level too there will be uncertainty (as you said, possible affects on movement on waitlists).

Our DS is at BS. Spring break right now. 17 boys in his dorm. 14 can’t go home or families can’t come visit. Boys are staying with family and friends here. Sure it’s the same elsewhere,

@HarrietMWelsch Hi, I’m curious, how are student visas affected by the coronavirus? I’m not trying to say that you are wrong, I would just like to know. Thank you!

@peachysoo, student visas aren’t exactly directly affected by the virus (and that’s not really what I was saying), though virus-related travel restrictions may play into delays in getting visas, and that can have rippling effects.
What I was saying is that COVID-19 is affecting admission decisions in multiple ways, differently at different schools, boarding and college. Just for one example, colleges have to think hard, as they prepare to make offers, about beds available or NOT available in 20-21 because of potential changes to study abroad numbers. For another single example, boarding schools have had to be realistic about what populations of students may or may not be able to attend in 20-21.
I don’t have any answers about what, if any, decisions will be made or changed because of all this at any given school, but it is definitely factoring into RD college decisions, and it has factored into M10 boarding school offers too.

I think it will affect admissions a lot. OOS people who have never visited a campus will most likely not attend. I would never got to a school I haven’t seen. Plus with the economy, OOS tuition is not an option for lots of people now. Lots of people will get in off the waitlists I predict.

@Boyandgirlmom, this is the Prep Schools forum. Unlike colleges, boarding schools don’t have different in-state/OOS tuitions.

For boarding, parents must commit by April 10 - likely in the absence of certainty as to if the BS will open like an OS in September. So much will depend on the rate of spread for this month in the U.S. All bets are off.

Just received an email from Asheville School that they are pushing back “decision date” to May 10 from “normal” April date.

Don’t know if this is going to be a trend but wanted to share in the event other schools make this decision.

I think you will see more movement off the wait list this year. Plus, it’s tough to commit to a school you have not seen. There are many folks on here who have either a) not seen the BS in person or b) do not have enough information to make a decision to commit to BS without a revisit. I have spoken to a few parents of accepted students ( of a different schools) and they are not as committed to sending kids or signing the contract. Also, there will be financial hardship for many parents. There is so much uncertainty, so if people were on “the fence” or not fully committed to the idea/cost/choice of sending a kiddo to a BS to begin with, then I think this will keep them home. Just saying from 2000 miles away.

I think my DD changed her mind about where to go based on all of the virus craziness, closer to home with her brother .

We definitely are considering not sending our daughter to boarding school due to the virus uncertainties. And our daughter’s first choice “on paper” is far away and a school we haven’t seen, so it is hard sign a contract for sure. However, we are finding that a lot of our options are extending the acceptance deadlines and even agreeing to defer her admission for the following year. I think the schools are doing their best to be accommodating

@southernfemmom … I get it. It would be so hard to send my kid without seeing the school. I was thinking if our family was in this situation what we would do. My kid has talked about bs for years and dislike her private school so in her mind it would be worth the chance. I think we would have gone for it knowing that if it didn’t work out she could always apply elsewhere for the next year or do a local option.

We actually talked about that last year when we were choosing. There is always the chance that even after revisits are done that actually attending a school may mean it is not a great fit.

Good luck with your choices. Off to look what her options are. ?

Thank you @msc3173 I know we aren’t alone facing this dilemma and feel for other families facing far tougher choices, but selfishly thus still feels hard. Grateful to have options

If its any consolation to you parents still on the fence, wondering if sending your student to boarding school is worth all these struggles, just ask us.! I do believe most of us would say that our kids are REALLY missing BS, their friends, their campus life, sports, traditions and the academics… It’s an adjustment coming back home - it is like a big realization about how they have moved on or have a different friendship group, different life at BS. It’s tough for many kids to be home and away from their school community.

If you can still swing it and can afford it, have faith that it is well worth it. Keep positive for your kids.
