Is there something that irks you about your child's college?

I swear I think my mom is gonna lose her mind with the finals schedule at my brother’s school. His last final finishes Saturday night at 8:30pm; and they have to be out of the dorm by 10am (during church). I think she is at the point of requesting a “parent-scheduler conference”

Ya, that whole during church conflict went by the wayside a long time ago. I think youth soccer did that in officially. I think mom needs to get over it.

I’d make him pack up and be ready for an 8:45pm pickup

I’ve never seen a food truck in the town or on campus.

@dolemite, if it’s Princeton there are food trucks that come from time to time. Just had a truckfest a week or so ago. Google Princeton truckfest dot org and I think the other (non-truckfest) times when trucks come are publicized pretty well by the res colleges.

Are they there daily or just for special events?

What bugs me is the high priced required meal plan, along with the flexible “option” money that isn’t optional and that’s more money than I spend on food outside of home. I guess they have to keep the on-campus Starbucks in business.

AFAIK not daily near or on campus. But that’s what Bent Spoon and all the other great places in town are there for!

^^ They guarantee whatever vendor that has the food services X number of meal plan purchases. The Starbucks is run by that same vendor.

One thing that irks me the most is that the fall semester final exams are right after the winter break. Instead of having a relaxing holiday break, it’s not fruitful to have final exams hanging over the whole winter break.

What drives me crazy is there is one person, and only one person, that handles each item. Need to change a meal plan Sue does that and she’s out today. Have a question about Florida bright futures? That’s Linda. Linda calls back the next day and she’s NOT the BF person, she’s the Florida prepaid person. For BF, you need to talk to Betty, and she’s gone for the day. Get something handled in financial aid office, you then have to complete it with the bursar’s office before daughter can register with the registrar’ office.

Other daughter goes to a school that is twice as big and I have no problems with their offices. They bend over backward to help.

One thing that irks me is all the weaponry. Oh, and hearing my kid tell me he is learning to kill with precision. I wish I were just editing his college papers…

(Still irked that he is at a service academy and not a regular college.)

Ahhhh. Where do I start? Can’t stand the tenement living conditions, lack of air conditioning, constant protests, and expensive food at one school. At the other school, the process of registration makes the Hunger Games look like a party. Can’t get her classes, wait lists are totally full and yet she needs these classes as pre-reqs for the only classes she can get into…WTH?

@TiggerDad, my daughter actually likes that schedule. The week leading up to winter break is not so stressful. Then they have the whole reading period before finals to get up to speed. She didn’t study over winter break

I can’t think of anything that irks me! It’s been a great experience for my daughter.

My solution to the quick dorm checkout after a late in schedule final is to have the student send everything to storage before the final and spend the night in a hotel. Not the cheapest option, but far less stressful.

@MaterS not cheap, but might actually be something my mom would consider.

why is there a final on Saturday night at 8 pm? that’s nuts.

I was thinking I love almost everything at my D’s college, and then I remembered we are moving out the day of her last final…Would a day later really matter to the college?

Loved my son’s schools but:

  1. a couple of very detail oriented/challenging classes were only offered at night in long 3 hour sessions which is not the ideal way to learn that kind of material
  2. he had to be out of the dorm by 8PM or so the day of graduation which made for a cruddy ending to a lovely graduation – if they had to be out even by noon or so the next day graduation day would have been so much nicer (we decided to go during senior week and bring most of his stuff home but even with that the last minute packing/cleaning was not what anyone wanted to do after a long graduation and a nice dinner out).

The thing I hate about my kids school is all of the off campus apartments have the kids sign a year lease in August. This means your responsible for the rent during the summer months when most kids have gone home for summer break.
