Is this good pre-MBA experience??

I am interested in going to Business school in a few years. I am very interested in one day pursuing a career in Management consulting. Currently, I am one year out of college and I am working at an Engineering Consulting Firm. I am not an engineer, so my job consists of a little bit of everything, research, marketing, assiting in legal matters, etc. Its a fairly interesting job and I was wondering if it is good pre-MBA experience. While the company deals with Engineering consulting, I think there is some correlation between this and Management consulting in terms of the process, such as a proposal as a first step, research, analysis, meetings, conference calls, etc.

I think that is a process that you see in MC firms and that is the same process my company uses but with Engineering issues. Do you think this might help when it comes to a career in MC because while I am not exposed directly to MC, I am exposed to the art of "consulting" and all its processes. I am learning a lot as well and observing how the engineers I work with go about working on a project from start to finish. Like management consulting, companies come to us with their problems and we have to fix them. I know there are tons of differences between the two, but I don't think this experience is irrelevant.

I'm curious about this as well...
what was your major in college?

My major was actually Political Science. Ha, I know, my job right now has nothing to do with my major. While I did do well in undergrad, I didn't really take the job thing seriously and try to get a job in politics and government. This job I am at now was posted to my school's career center network and they were looking for a recent college grad with an interest in architecture and engineering who was looking to go to law school one day. At the time, thats what I thought I wanted to do eventually. But, as time progressed, I decided law school definitely wasn't for me and I'd rather go to Business school after working for a number of years to get experience.

Now I have even come to realize that I don't really even want to do anything that is in politics or government. Management consulting really interests me though. I was just wondering if the job I am at now is good experience. It probably won't be the only job I have before business school, but I was just wondering if it was relevant at all.

But say I want to get my foot in the door in Management consulting. Do they hire undergrads for entry level positions or does everyone usually have an MBA? I was thinking I would try to get involved with Management consulting before going to B-school but I have no idea where to start or if I am even qualified.

Use your alum network. Find the alums who are in the industry and talk to them.

Good advice. Thanks.
