Is this legal?

Hi!

I'm currently in on-level precalculus, but in previous years I have been in honors math classes. I was struggling freshman and sophomore year in math because of my ADHD, but this year I'm not. I really enjoy math, and I was prescribed adderall at the beginning of the year so I am doing a lot better in all of my classes. My councilor never told me that if I did on-level precalc I wasn't allowed to do AP Calculus unless my teachers recommended me for it. In precalc I have a 97%, and haven't gotten lower than a 93% in any quarter. I really like the class and I decided to sign up for AP Calculus AB and my councilor didn't have a problem with it.

Today my teacher asked to see me after class and told me I have to sign a waiver that says I can't switch out of AP Calc AB to honors calc if I am struggling. Is this legal? I really don't think that this is fair.... I know at other schools in the county they don't have to do this, so why should I have to? Has anyone else had this problem before..?

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure you should talk to your counselor; they should be able to fix this situation.

My school does this. You’re getting A’s now in precalc so I couldn’t picture you struggling horribly in AB. Its just the school saying its not their fault if you do bad bc you weren’t recommended for the higher level course. You can still take the course so there’s no worries.

I don’t know if my d’s school made anyone sign anything but they did have a rule that you couldn’t switch to a lower class once you decided on an AP one. Not sure that it makes a lot of sense.

Our school doesn’t allow you to change classes after the first two weeks of the semester. Anyone who signs up for AP classes has to sign something saying that they understand they won’t be able to drop down.
