<p>I'm a freshman in college and for one of my gen eds I'm taking a 200 level into to cultural anthropology class. So far, we've had a two page paper that we turned in at the beginning of October, and a midterm that we took at the beginning of November that was 20 mc questions on a scantron and a 1 page essay response. We have a research paper that's due the last day of classes, in a couple weeks.</p>
<p>This all seems fine, except that my professor hasn't graded ANYTHING at all this semester. Every class period he tells us how he will get them back to us "soon," and that he appreciates our patience. He also canceled the final exam to give himself more time to grade everything else. Basically, I have had no feedback on my work, and I won't have any idea about what my grade will be until after grades are due. He said that he will be "generous" with the grade distribution, whatever that means. </p>
<p>This guy is a lecturer, meaning that he's not a tenured professor, so he has to get a new contract every semester. He wants us to show up on the last day of class so we can fill out a course evaluation, and he would appreciate it if we were "humane" in our evaluations.</p>
<p>I guess my question is whether or not this is normal behavior from non-tenured professors, and if anyone else here has had a similar experience.</p>
<p>It’s all right, don’t worry too much. It’s at least good that he cancelled the final. Not sure if this is normal or not, nor have I had similar experience. But, I just keep trying to tell myself “it’ll all turn out all right in the end”. He’s probably just a slow grader, and I’d take his word that he’d be generous. Heck, since everything for most of my classes is based on a curve, I don’t know what grade I have either, until after the finals when everyone’s grade is put together and then they go by the distribution anyways</p>
<p>I have had a few classes like this (taught by tenured professors though). While I wouldn’t want all of my classes run like this, I actually find it pleasant to have one easy class each term. As long as the professors expectations matches the effort he puts into the class, I won’t complain. (For example, if I’m practically guaranteed an A or A-, I’m okay with not getting feedback.)</p>
<p>I’m going thru the same thing now, although we’ve had way more work, just they keep changing the system so none of us has any idea how we’re doing. I guess that makes it suck more, cause we have the work but no feedback…Canceling the final for that reason is really ghetto though. I did have one class where the entire grade was m/c midterm and final, but the important thing is to not have these things changed repeatedly like this and stressing everyone out over his laziness to grade a 2 page paper. </p>
<p>I mean that’s really inconsiderate and personally I would respond in kind at the eval and on ratemyprof, unless his lecture outweighs all that and you’re actually learning a lot. It’d be unfortunate to give him a decent eval and find that he didn’t keep his word and you have to appeal the grade. But again they have an obligation to both educate and make the class run smoothly and fairly, so I’d rate him down somewhat just for the grading fiasco.</p>
