Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should include this information as a part of my transfer essay. As I have mentioned before, I have been struggling with depression ever since I got to my current school, not just because of my chronic illness, but because the school is a terrible fit. Ever since last year, I have received trouble for being who I am; straight, feminine, artistic, and interdisciplinary. The former two have given me social trouble and the latter two have affected my ability to perform in class. Where this causes a problem is that I want the same level of academic rigor, but I want it with an artistic, interdisciplinary approach and an environment that won't chastise me for wearing dresses and makeup, shaving my legs, and flirting with boys. I cannot learn properly if I don't relate the material to other subjects, but (with the exception of creative writing classes and a rare English or psych class) I have gotten trouble for "not focusing". All of these problems, along with the fact that my current school does not offer a Creative Writing major, are my reasons for leaving. What I want to know is how to present these reasons without sounding ungrateful or rude. This is really a difficultly for me since all of these issues are essential to my rationale.

Don’t talk about why you want to leave your school. Find schools that you think will be good fits and just mention that you want to major in creative writing. Also, talk about how you can benefit from that environment.

Also, please think before posting something like this. You have made rash generalizations. Lesbians can shave their legs and wear dresses.

I never said that lesbians could not shave their legs and wear dresses, I said that I, specifically have received trouble for doing so. This statement does not apply to anyone of a particular group across the board, just the people with whom I attend school. Where I am, I have been harassed for wanting to dance with a boy and shave my legs after only a day. If this statement really did apply to a whole group, I would not be as bothered. Because it reflects the behavior at my school specifically, however, I wish to leave.

Be sure you research CW at schools you are interested in transferring to. Often CW is not a major, but rather it is a concentration w/in an English major.

I don’t see any problem with stating some of the reasons your current school is not working for you along with the reasons for being interested in the transfer school. It’s all in the way you say it, you can explain without bashing.

If you focus your “Why College X” essay on the desire for a more interdisciplinary focus in your program of studies, I think you will be fine.
