Hi everyone,

As an undergraduate (4th semester) in Germany, I'm desperately trying to do everything I can to be able to do my graduate studies at a nice university in America. I know that research experience is important, but I don't know whether I have understood, what kind of research they are looking for:
After talking to some professors and waving around with my transcript, I've been able to get a small position as research assistant. It is my task to design and program a plugin to extend a UML modeling software and also program a link to another software used at that institute.
I know that its called research assistantship, but does this really count as research experience for American universities? True, I have to do a lot on my own, but there is nothing fundamental about it...

As you can see, Im a bit confused with the meaning of research. Afaik "true research" is only available to PHD students and even this programming job wasn't intended for an undergraduate...

Thanks in advance to whoever takes time to respond :)
