Is this too many colleges? & if so, what do I do?

I want to apply to 11 schools. The list contains:

A) 3 reach schools which I would love to attend.
B) 2 match schools which I would love to attend.
C) 3 match schools which I would like attending, but I am a bit less enthusiastic about them in comparison to schools in A & B.
D) 3 schools which I feel are safeties that I am honestly not very enthusiastic about, but would be able to enjoy them (2 state schools and a less competitive private in which I am a legacy)

Is 11 too many schools? How do I go about eliminating colleges? I've seriously been searching for colleges since sophomore year (I'm a rising senior), and I don't know if I can narrow it down further than this.

I say completely eliminate C completely- why bother with matches you don’t like when you have some you love?

And I’d eliminate it to 1 or 2 safeties. Safeties are colleges you KNOW you will be in- so pick a favorite, 2 if you can’t decide, and that’s that.

“completely eliminate C completely”- smooth job, self. :P

^there’s an edit feature btw :P

11 is fine if you can manage doing the applications. Group C and D are the schools that might be able to offer the most merit aid to you(if you are interested in not paying full ticket price of a & b).

I don’t see a reason to cut any, except maybe 1 safety. Fall in love with 1 or 2 safeties. Pretend like the three are your only choices and its April 30(day before deposit is due). Which one would you eliminate automatically based on a preferred interest for the other or lack there of for one.

btw you might want to remove from group c, to create a slight reach list.

i tend to think of reaches as any schools that have a below 20 percent acceptance rate as a reach for everyone. but a slight reach could be schools that are in the 20-35 percent acceptance rate. Schools that you have comparable stats to, but schools that don’t just look at stats in consideration for admissions.

eliminate some of c and 1/2 of d unless forced to apply

Really? How do you edit posts?

its temporary. like 5 to 10 mins?

11 schools is way too many to be applying too. Apply to 4 or 5 schools tops. Theres no reason to pay $500 in application fees just to make sure you have options. Narrow your choices down before applying so you can choose wisely.

eliminate d and you’re good to go :)

Eliminate C, you do need safeties so keep D, and if you like A & B you should apply.

malik…5 is not enough. the optimal # is 9. 3 safeties, 3 reaches, 3 desirables

oh and a way to narrow down is look if they have the major you are looking for or a good graduate school

i loathe the 3/3/3 rule. why the hell would anyone need 3 safeties?!?! i say, eliminate 2 of those safeties & turn them into super-reaches.
anyhoo, if i were u, i would eliminate c & d, & add an e that reads:E) 1-2 safeties that u like & an f that reads:F) 1-2 super reaches that are super-ly awesome.

…& voila, you’ve got yourself a list ;)

Take one away from C and one away from D.

I’d do 4 reaches, 4 matches, and 2 safeties (1 academic, 1 financial)

^^they call me cc, logic warrior explained it. different types of safety= financial, academic, and both

Thank you all for the insight! I definitely have a lot of consideration to do, everything you’ve all said sounds so right. Applying to 5 schools is definitely NOT for me (as you can see with my 11), so that’s not happening.

I’m still not positive what exactly I’m going to do yet, but because of your posts I’m definitely better equipped with the logic to make the decision. I don’t want to apply to schools that I really don’t want to be at or are virtually the same. Thus I will have to rule out at least one school from section (D); leaving me with one academic safety (school in which I am a legacy) and one financial/academic safety (state school).
