Hi everyone! I'm currently a sophomore in high school and lately I've been researching a lot of colleges and universities and careers. After watching a television show a while back, I got interested in the idea of screenwriting. I love to write and I'm really creative, and I started to play around with the idea of being a screenwriter or working with film. I've never thought of it before so I have no experience with film making, cameras, or basically theater, but I'm really interested. The thing that worries me if I get a Film study major is that I won't find a job. I know working in the film industry is really competitive, but I really want to try it in college. Right now in high school I feel like there aren't many opportunities for me. I can take theater and journalism in my next two years, but I feel like maybe I should take something over the summer involving creative writing or screenwriting.

Okay so to sum it all up... I'm very interested in film production and making scripts and collaborating for tv shows, but I don't know where to start since I'm in high school. I don't know if it would be a plausible major. I don't want to be jobless when I get out of college, but I'm willing to work my way up! What college would be best for me? If anyone is pursuing anything in screenwriting or film please share your story and how you got started and please give me some advice. I love the idea of me one day being a screenwriter for tv shows and working with many different people on projects but I don't know where to start or to keep my dream alive.

I’m in a similar boat as you, execpt I want to be a film producer rather than a screenwriter. Yes film is VERY competitive, but with devotion and dedication you can make it. First off make sure you are ABSOLUTELY sure that screenwriting is what you love. Any part of the film production takes up LOTS of time. For me, Im absolutely sure of my choice. Have been since I was 5. I started writing stories, any I can think of. I write character development, plot outlines, anything that comes to my mind. I ALSO do a lot of research. I research what makes a good plot, what makes good characters, I also read movie reviews and movie interviews. I would give the same advice to you. Do lots of reading. Write down your thoughts. Even if your school doesn’t offer any classes, try doind stuff on your own. Thats what I do. I make little videos and I keep a notebook with me wherever I go. Don’t get discouraged about being “jobless” as long as dont give up you will succeed. Now you wont be picked up as a screenwriter right out of college. People usually start as an intern and work their way up. It takes YEARS to become where you want to be. That’s why well known screenwriters and directors are almost 50 years old.
Now for colleges: since you are a sophmore KEEP YOUR GPA HIGH! A handful of universities that have a screenwriting major only are prettt difficult to get into. But don’t worry, there are easier schools to get into. I suggest CSU long beach, CSU northridge, and San diego state. Those have excellent film programs, and are easier than USC,UCLA , Syracuse, etc. and are cheaper. Look up list of top film schools, Hollywood reporter put up the top 25 film schools in the nation. If you want tp gove those a try, go for it. Remember to keep praticing, post some stories on websites (I suggest fanfiction) so people can read them, and you can get feedback on how you are doing. Im on fanfiction, and other websites as well so I would be happy to read some of your work. Just keep your head up, focus, and be willing to work hard. If film is what you love, go for it, because you dont want to work in something you hate.
Good Luck!

Sorry my phone sucks, Im much better at grammar, I promise.
