Is UChicago where the fun dies?

everyone is focused on their work and THAT’s the fun

Just visited my freshman son, good-looking, smart, basketball player in High School, very social is how everyone describes him. He does love to study, but is a very balanced person. He is having a blast! He loves U chicago. He especially loves the diversity of people and ideas. Best decision he ever made, he said.

Same here. Just got back from parents weekend and my son feels the same as Jugglingitall’s son. He’s also an athlete, very social and very good-looking. Told me that this is definitely NOT the place where fun comes to die. He’s definitely found a balance between having fun and studying hard. He’s tired… but not complaining. He loves the school, the city, his housemates, and professors. Admittedly, I am pleasantly surprised. Said that he heard someone say that the classes over the past few years are starting to look “more normal,” especially this year’s freshman class. He also loves the diversity of ideas and people… and there are plenty of good-looking girls to grab his attention. Chose Chicago over D1 for the academics and couldn’t be happier.

what is D1?

–and why the references to ‘good looking’? in-joke or is there something I don’t know? I thought that U of Chicago was about the Life of the Mind and not the body - I read it in one of their brochures they sent me. Oh , I forgot -one can have a beautiful mind :)

^Division 1. UChi is a Division 3 school.

The OP of this thread was from 2007! Just get over this stupid question already and move on.

doh! my–I mean, our bad, sorry, drdom! I did not notice the time of the orig thread, but just the subject.

seriously, subjects are sometimes specific to a poster but can also be independent of a particular poster. the oft repeated phrase ‘the place where fun goes to to die’ re UC is not poster dependent and is worthy of unpacking as long as the phrase persists in people’s minds.

if one thinks this is a stupid subject or discussion, then ignore it - there are only about 740,000 other discussions going on right now on CC.

agreed that the phrase is somewhat flip, and accordingly has in fact been put on tshirts , sold by and under UC 's approval, I believe. It is reductionist as all pithy, terse sayings go, and therefore is misleading almost by its nature. But not only that, as gilligan might say, it is funny.

OTOH - But I do see some OP particulars and some of the responses might not even be true anymore - such as references to off off shows, eg. maybe they had them in 2007 but not now?

yeah - good reason to just open up another thread on the subject, UC-WFGTD ? agree some with the dr.

Well, from their web site [OFF-OFF CAMPUS](http://off-off.uchicago.edu/)

What I meant to say is that the question is stupid in that it is frustrating how often this comes up time and again on CC regarding the university of Chicago. Just do a search of those words and you’ll see many threads and replies. I guess the review books mention it so it self perpetuates - it is just tiresome and I wish people would just search rather than ask de novo - that’s all.

Hey drdom, be careful what you wish for. Once they start doing searches, look what happens–revival of a 2007 thread! So, I’ll repeat my years-old comment, “where fun comes to die” is a JOKE!

Still a joke, but maybe getting to be an old one.

yep. very old.

So what if my son played guitar with the Museum of Science and Industry’s roomate-for-a-month McGroarty and walked to the Obama rally on Saturday…that’s the kind of dead fun going on with a fourth year Maroon.
