Is UCLA worth the money?

  • I am a freshman in high school still.. Only 14, but I would appreciate even the minimal amount of advice :)

I am from Ohio.

I have nothing better to do, so I have been looking into colleges… Everyone wants to go to California I would think… Beach and such a big city surrounding you. I looked at OOS fees and it’s $56,000 a year for UCLA and around the same for UCSD. Would it even be worth taking $200k+ loans out to enjoy four years? Or should I take the in-state tuition “bonus” at The Ohio State University and go to Grad School at UCLA? I want to major in computer science… My mom does that.

I do not come from a family that is wealthy, middle class. My grandfather is wealthy… CEO of company, but I don’t want to ask for a $200-300k present haha…

Any suggestions? I know there are no merit scholarships in UCs and it would be ridiculously hard to get a full ride in Cal. My cousin has a full ride at cal tech, but yeah.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks!!

1)No, not worth it by a long shot!

  1. you can’t take out that much in loans on your own; the limit is around 6K/year w/o your parents cosigning

If your cousin has a full ride at Cal Tech, then either he/she has zero EFC, or else won a huge outside scholarship. Cal Tech has no merit aid, only FA. Even their Stamps Leadership scholarship requires need for consideration and replaces need-based grants in the FA package.

Ahh idk I must heard wrong. She got presidential scholarship… That is different. My grandfather said full ride… But yeah

Good grief, there are lots and lots of excellent LA-area colleges besides UCLA & Caltech where u could get FA and merit aid.

Even as an OOS student?

Take a look at some of the private schools in California where you will be more likely to get FA and merit aid. The cost is the same at private schools for OOS or IS.

lol dude just stalking as usual
youre only a freshman? (im a junior haha)
I used to live in ohio but now I live in missouri so if i had to go to my states college i would pick OSU over University of Missouri anyday
i used to want to go to UCLA or Berkeley really bad but OOS kills
so if worst comes to worst at least remember that OSU is pretty high up there for public unis

Ohio State University has a very good Computer Science Department from what I’ve heard.

What experience do you have with coding?

Do you know any languages?

Are you familiar with algorithms?

No, logically think about travel costs to get back home. OSU is the way to go, I personally hate OSU but it has a lower opportunity cost

OSU & then UCLA for grad school if that’s what you want. I personally find it ridiculous to spend so much $$ for an undergraduate degree if you are planning on going for graduate school. Graduate school is what REALLY matters.

If you qualify, I think the honors college at Ohio University is also worth looking into.

$200,000 for a brand name… might help you with ignorant, slimy employers, but not if there’s nothing to show behind that name. Go to a school that’s affordable and the one you’d actually see yourself going for four years, not because of the name.
