Is UM-AA Worth the Debt?

CC ppl u just seem to want your thoughts validated- Such a Michigan trait - sorry.
Get out of your own way. Pick a school. Go there. Do the best that u can because in the end ONLY that matters. A ‘C’ student from michigan will be trumped by an A student from State. No matter what or who u know.

This is for the most part true. A lot of companies have a cutoff GPA of 3.0, no matter which school attended, so the 3.7+ GPA from Michigan State will look better (and can get into more grad schools) than a <3.0 at UMich (same major).

A lot of Michigan State students in Engineering do better than a Psych major at UMich. But the average UMich student does better than the average MSU kid. The same applies where many UMich CompSci students can do better than someone at UChicago, Brown, Cornell for CS.

People have to remember that their school will not carry them to the finish line. It just keeps them in the race.

@gottaknwnow the fact you just tried to classify a trait as a “Michigan thing” shows a lot about your own personality, quite frankly.

But you are right, of course a 3.0 from UM will look much worse than a 3.7 at MSU… Hell a 3.4 at UM should look worse than a 3.7 at MSU (at least for Med School standards).

@hailbate the fact you just tried to classify a trait as a “Michigan thing” shows a lot about your own personality, quite frankly. Quite frankly, What does it say? Does it reveal that I graduated from Michigan at the top of my class? Because I did. Does it say that even with the UM degree, great work ethic and ability - I still needed to prove my merit to employers. What some don’t seem to get is that the degree and school’s reputation stop at the HR office - then it’s on you. At Michigan, we tend to “drink the Kool-Aid” that is what I meant by a Michigan trait. A little reality before graduation is a good thing

For an engineer that amount of debt is acceptable. If you were majoring in musical theater I might answer differently. In state tuition at UM is an incredible bargain. Just make sure you study and do well there and don’t get caught up in side activities.

" If you were majoring in musical theater I might answer differently."

I have to disagree with the above statement. The very few students that are accepted to the top ranked MT program probably have a higher rate of professional success than many other majors.

You are likely referring to other Liberal Arts majors like English - my major. But that isn’t saying much because it’s also hard to find jobs with those majors either.
