Is UM on the quarter system?

Is the University of Michigan on the quarter system?

Seeing as I am currently on break for four months, no. We have two semesters: fall and winter mainly. Fall is from September to December and Winter is January to April. Classes are also offered spring/summer too though, but the majority of the students here will be here regularly for fall/winter.

Everyone calls it semesters, but this is actually a misnomer since we operate on trimesters. Each term is 4 months long, split into 3 intervals of the year

Michigan’s academic calendar operates on a trimester system. There are three trimesters; Fall (early September - late December), Winter (early January to late April) and Spring/Summer (which are divided into two shorter sessions, one from early May to late June and one from early July until late August). Most students take only the Fall and Winter trimesters and graduate in four years. Some students do spend a Spring or Summer sub-trimester to catch up or get ahead, but that is not usually required.

Thanks, I had read about that somewhere but somehow trimester sounded too weird. I’d never heard that before other than referring to pregnancies  Thanks for clarifying that up. So bottom line, it’s trimesters, but you can choose to do only 2 out of the 3 per year, correct?

Well, you can choose to do 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 if you want, because the spring and summer terms are separate (each are exactly half the length of fall and winter). Most common is 2 terms, which is most commonly fall and winter.

“So bottom line, it’s trimesters, but you can choose to do only 2 out of the 3 per year, correct?”

That is correct Franko. Most students take 2 out of 3 trimesters per year (usually Fall and Winter trimesters) and graduate in 4 years doing so. Michigan summer breaks last from later April until early September. That’s AWESOME!

That is different, but sounds does sound pretty awesome.
