Over Winter Break, I decided to apply to UNC. I’m wondering if it is too much of a reach for me, and what I can expect.
3.73 Unweighted GPA (Most rigorous curriculum given what my school offered)
34 Superscored ACT (35 E, 34 M, 33 R, 33 S)
740 Math II, 720 Chemistry, 730 US History
APUSH (5), AP Chem (3)
6 APs, 4 Honors, 2 CC courses by the time I graduate
Solid Extracurriculars and Essays
OOS (California)
Asian Indian Male
Major: Computer Science
I would think you would be competitive among OOS applicants. No guarantees sadly since the admissions percentage for OOS applicants is really low.
Hopefully you and my D will both be pursuing CS degrees at UNC next year.
I would say that you are on the bubble with your test scores and GPA. Your chances are not helped by applying RD as opposed to EA, as there were a record number of EA applicants to UNC this year: http://uncnews.unc.edu/2015/10/28/unc-chapel-hill-receives-record-19682-applications-for-first-year-early-action-admission-deadline/.
^^ Every single year, the number of EA applicants goes up. Last year was a record number too. You have a pretty good chance of getting in, but due to the fact that OOS acceptance is pretty low, I won’t say you’re definitely in.
I think it’s a push as an OOS applicant. Good luck.
OOS admission is capped at 18% of an entering freshman class; and with increasing EA applications (and, presumably, increasing numbers of highly qualified applicants seeking to lock up spaces early in the process), your chances of admission decrease. Assuming that the Naviance numbers for our school are any kind of guide, your statistics suggest that you are a marginal admit.
Of course, only the admissions office knows for sure.
