Is undergrad biomedical engineering a good move?

I know that Tech is a GREAT engineering school but I hear that it's never a good idea to major in BME undergrad and that I should wait and specialize in grad school. Is this true at Tech as well? How good is the program (especially in job availability)? I'm thinking of doing electrical eng. undergrad and doing BME during grad school. (But I'd be willing to do a Master's in BME even if I do my bachelor's degree in it as well)

My daughter is a freshman BME major who will be changing majors. (She really wants med school and BME is not the way to a great GPA). I have met BME majors who graduated and were regretful of their major and other students who changed to a different engineering discipline. At facet we were told that the incoming class starts out with ~400 BME majors and ends up with ~250. Kids joke that it stands for Business Major Eventually. All that said, their program is well respected. I’m sure there are others that can give you more complete info.

Thanks for your insight!

I’m also a student at GT and I have a lot of friends who started as BMEs and are switching. Their respective reason s vary, but I would contact current students/graduates and heed their advice

Hi,
This is actually the exact same situation I was faced with in 11th grade. I was interested in medicine and engineering, but wanted something more versatile than medicine. I ultimately chose Electrical Engineering.
If you take Biomed in your undergrad itself, you may be confining the areas you could possibly explore. And considering the fact that you are fresh out of high school, and your passions or interest may vary at the drop of a hat, I strongly suggest you go with a broader field that allows you to specialize in BioMed in your masters. Electrical Engineering is a far better option in my opinion. You can take courses in Sustainable Energy, Bio-medicine, Computer Science, Electronics etc (which are all possible if you take EE) and see what you like the best, and major in that in grad school.

As far as job opportunities are concerned, I remember my parents telling me that job opps in Biomed are weak, but I am not 100% sure of that myself.

thanks so much!
