Is Wash U pretty well known worldwide?

I hear that it has a pretty big international student population. Is this true? Does it have a reputable academic reputation abroad?

It has a big international student population, with students from over 100 nations.
It doesn’t have as big a reputation as Oxford, obviously, but I think it probably has a good reputation. My guess is that top students in countries around the world look into the top universities in the US and apply from that knowledge.
The best person to ask would be someone who is international!

My S applied to WashU from Turkey. Never heard of it before, his counselor advised it. Once we did some research, we found out tons of good things about it. Nevertheless, it is not widely known - and I guess that is the case in the US too - I lived in the US for 20 years, working as an EE, and never heard of WashU.

I mean it lacks recognition in the States, so I assumed that it lacked it overseas as well. But it’s Medical School is tied 3rd with Penn right behind JHU and Harvard. That is amazing.

I am sure it’s known among those in the know but it’s also supposed to be one the top schools with the highest rate of international students.

yea, its not famous in china either… but thing is in china ppl only know havard, yale, stanford and mit… so…

Actually, among the highly-educated-top-tier applicants, I think Wash U may be better known abroad than it is at home. In the US much of the “name” comes from irrelevant things like history and sports teams (ex: Cornell is better known bc it’s an Ivy, even though it’s not ranked as well. USC is better known simply bc of sports). Abroad, however, people often get their info simply from ranking lists, which Wash U is continually ascending. I just got back from an exchange to a very prestigious HS is China, and the kids there applying to US schools absolutely knew about Wash U. Many students cited the 2010 US News & World Report ranking list, which places Wash U at #12.

It’s true that internationally average people know only about a few Ivies… but the people who matter (major employers) will be very familiar with Wash U.
