Isn't it funny how universities put all this money into ads and fancy brochures and commercials trying to get you to attend their school yet end up getting so many they have to reject them?
I just thought that was a kind of interesting thought, it would be like making some really fantastic product, putting all this money into ads then only allowing certain number of them to be sold.

That’s called Marketing. And it’s done all the time. Remember Beanie Babies? And the Wii ?

Uh…no? It’s basic business. The more people who apply, the more money they get from application money. You’re giving them money in order for them to decide whether or not you’re worthy enough to spend MORE money on them for the next four years.

And you do it. Because you’ll get an education out of it.

Eastern Nazarene College… yay! :D

It boosts their selectivity, making them more attractive and–at least they hope–more prestigious.

Why would a college not want an applicant pool large enough for them to make choices on who to admit?

Colleges keep sending me brochures to consider their school. They make all kinds of deals like no application fee and a free pen. After all the “We want YOUUUUUU here!” messages, getting rejected would be hilarious.

Selectivity is a criteria for the US N&WR college rankings:

[Methodology: Undergraduate Ranking Criteria and Weights - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/best-colleges/2009/08/19/methodology-undergraduate-ranking-criteria-and-weights.html?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a41:g26:r16:c0.018967:b27244044:z0&s_cid=loomia:methodology-ranking-category-definitions)

So, colleges market to get more applicants (divisor) for a relatively fixed number of spots (dividend), which results in a smaller acceptance rate and increased selectivity.

They also make a fair share of the money they put into that kind of marketing back with the fees from the applications that it brings in…

Igi- I know LOL, the one even made me my own personal page on their site I can go to and look at to see if I like had their school, and they had the postcard personilized with artwork on the front with my name in it and all this stuff that would cost them quite a bit of money. I don’t plan to apply there but it would be kind of interesting if they rejected me, especially since I have a nice GPA and transcript.

Everyone- Yeah i know, it’s business and marketing, I just thought that was kind of funny. :)

^aw, lilac, u got hit with some speeches, there. lol. but, yeah, it suckss.

When I think of all that paper wasted… sad.

navyFIELD- Agreed, non very eco friendly. Some of them are putting ads online and emailing them instead so that’s a little better. :)

it is funny. but eh, everything’s a business now

True, very true.
