It may sounds Idiot but.... What's a College Essay ?

Hi Everyone !!

Well, this question may sounds terribly dumb, but behind this, is simply the unawareness of the process.

I'm french Law Student, studying in France, applying to US Universities through ISEP.
They ask for 2 of these.

Point is what's a college Essay ?
I've found some on the Web, but still, It's very various and I get kind of lost...

Here, in France, this is never asked, only your grades are counting, and Universities are choosing on these information (when they're allowed to choose who's getting in, which is reserved to some in Paris, Lyon & Aix en Provence).

To be clear :

--1-- What do I have to show in an Essay !

--2-- What is the Topic of a College Essay ? (a Topic the give You ? a Topic the give you choose ? in France you never have a free-topic Essay especially in Law...)

--3-- What must a a College Essay Contain ?

--4-- Does it have a particular visual presentation ? (I mean should it look like in french legal-Essay : I-a / I-b / II-a / II-b ; or no plan should be seen ?)

--5-- What NOT to do ?

--6-- Any advice ?

Thanks a Lot in Advance

Best Regards,

PS : all my apologize for all the mistakes that may occur in this message.

A college essay is your essay-length response to a question (aka prompt) posed in an application for college. Prompts are given; sometimes you get to choose from a number of prompts. Typically you write something from personal experience or something about why you want to attend the college in question. Your essay demonstrates your writing skills, but much more importantly it gives the admissions committee a better understanding of who you are – your background, your values, your thought process, your goals, your ability to handle a situation, et cetera.

There is good advice here:

[Essays, Admission Information, Undergraduate Admission, U.Va.](http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/writingtheessay.html)

It’s a delicious pastry that you bake for admissions! You find a cool food to make and bring it to the admissions office. If they like it, then you get in if they don’t they don’t accept you.

Thanks a lot to all of you !

these pieces of advice will help me to “bake” them a “delightful pastry” (good Idea to present it like that to a frenchy !! ) .

I think I’ll post it after it has been corrected to have your mind about it .

Keep just in mind it’s my very first one, and it’s not something we do here…
We’re not used to talk about us, we feel it’s boasting ourselves…

I’ll keep you aware,

Thanks and Best Regards,

No, don’t post it here. If you do, it may be submitted by someone else as his own work. If you really think you need feedback from people here, read this for better ways to get it.
