@SculptorDad , One of my kids is like that too. It can be difficult to know whether to try to rein her in. We parents must do what we can to avoid adding external pressure; they have so much internal pressure already.
@twinsmama, I agree. She doesn’t want to take too much challenges, but often ends up taking them anway, and then stays committed.
She wasn’t that stressed with grades. I keep told her that she can afford two B’s and will still end up 3.9. Chemistry was going to be a B regardless of final exam score if the professor didn’t curve. Good thing she still worked hard, and seems professor broke his word and curved after all.
U.S. History professor also somehow gave A against his syllabus that clearly stated that minimum score for A is 900 and not 895.
Imagine getting 242/300 instead of 247 on the final essay that the professor subjectively graded without any comments or marks, when he keeps a clear grade table and knows that you need 247.
Sounds like a lot to put on a 13 year old. Hope all goes well and there are no breakdowns in the future. Good luck and take her out to a good movie or laser tag or something else that is pure fun.
Thanks. She is taking less courses this semester, and will go to a BS this Fall. Then she plans to spend 4 years focused on enjoying friendship and social activities, while only working as hard as average BS students on academics.
Her pure fun other than reading and art is talking to age peers. That’s hard to come by since she is homeschooled and many age peers stopped homeschooling, too busy and too far. Local day schools didn’t seem to be much better, as kids just study study and then go home. Hence the boarding schools.
And I am sorry for unwittingly hijacking the thread. Hopefully the original discussion was about done, if not please continue. I will stop hijacking now. There isn’t any more story anyway.
I think that BS will be a nice experience for her @SculptorDad! As you said, being around kids her own age and taking high-school classes will probably be really fun for her. Sometimes its nice to just be part of the “pack” (or should I say #squad?!?!)
Is there somewhere I can find the range of SSAT scores a particular day school typically accepts?
Boarding School Review (which is free, online) has data, which some argue is inaccurate or out of date. However, in cases where I have seen the info published by the school, BSR stats did match or were within a point.
@6teenSearch – I was posting about a day only prep school. I have not had much luck searching the net. I didn’t ask the AO during our interview so I am hoping to find it else where
Oh sorry, I missed that. Most days schools ask for ISEE and I’ve not seen them published anywhere, but then we only looked at one day.
Around me day schools use SSAT (some will accept ISEE also) but data is much harder to find on acceptance rates and test scores.
Correct @MA2012 My son took the SSAT for his day-only school.
Most NYC schools use the ISEE, and they are notoriously tight-lipped about test scores and acceptance rates.
I took the ISEE a few years ago as a sixth grader and got around 9,8,7,7 but I took the SSAT this year and I got in the high 90s percentile for each section and overall. Weird? Or am I just more of an “SSAT” type of person?
