Hello CCers
This is my first thread and at the moment, I am pretty desperate. HELP ME FIND A COLLEGE!
I would like to pursue the pre-medical path and specifically major in Bio-Chemistry. I have some family problems and as a result, my parents will not be helping me pay for college. At the moment I don't know where I want to go, but I do know that I will need some help paying for it. I am fine with full rides, partial scholarships, and work study programs. Anything is fine, I just need help finding colleges and scholarships for them.

What I am looking for in an college:
I'm looking for a university that has decent(somewhat prestigious) resources for the pre-medical students but also a campus a party almost everyday. I want to be able to study hard on the week days but then party hard on the weekends. I would like it if there is a decent city near by, however that is not necessary. I am also looking for a college that will give me decent aid - specifically merit. I, myself, can pay up to 20K per year. The weather of the surrounding area I am not too concerned with. Just academics and partying(things to do on campus). Oh, and also girls. I want co-ed.

So a little about myself!

You might try posting this in the college search forum. This is a forum for people who have questions about financial aid.

What state are you in? $20k a year plus the Stafford loans should cover almost every instate university in the country.

University of Alabama has some automatic programs. Are you NMSF? A lot of colleges have full or half tuition scholarships-some even full ride-like Baylor, University of Southern California (although even with half-tuition it is still a lot).

With your statistics, I would try any university in the top 70. Also, you might be able to get into Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, which is rather cheap and decently prestigous. And ASU is known to be quite a party school.

Try the University of Georgia. They have a scholarship program with a minimum 3.75 GPA and 1400 SAT/31 ACT score, which you exceed. The top awards come with an OOS tuition waiver plus a $15,700 stipend for OOS students (that would leave about $5K per year left to pay, which could be covered with Stafford loans and/or work-study), and the next tier is an OOS tuition waiver plus a $7,700 stipend (which leaves a little over $13K to pay per year). They also have lower-tier awards with lower amounts, but they all come with an OOS tuition waiver which will save you about $18,000 per year.

Anyway, UGA is a pretty well-known party school. Strong Greek system, Division I sports, and a pretty little college town that’s pretty well-known for revolving around UGA. Atlanta is about an hour away and there is a lot of partying to be had in Atlanta. If I had not gotten a full scholarship to my private Atlanta college, I would’ve gone to UGA.

* I, myself, can pay up to 20K per year.*

Really, where would you get $80k over 4 years?

Anyway…The University of Alabama would give you at least free tuition…including free out of state tuition.

This is an ASSURED scholarship. Bama has about 500 frosh that enroll each year with this scholarship.

What did you get on your PSAT? If you’re a likely NMF, then you’d get a lot more. My son is pre-med at Bama and loves it.

Bama has excellend pre-med advising and does do Committee Letters which is a huge help for med school admissions.

Start with your instate public universities. It is very likely that with $20,000 and a Stafford loan, you would be able to cover most of your costs. Add to that income from a summer job and working during the school year, and you would likely be able to cover your costs.

If you are looking for a party campus, you will likely find partiers at any university. Re: premed studies, you just need to take the requisite courses for entry into medical school, get a GREAT GPA and do well on the MCATS. The “prestige” of your undergrad school is secondary.

In addition to the listed schools above (all good suggestions), I would suggest you look at the SUNY schools. They are modestly priced even for OOS students. In addition, look at the requirements for applying for the McNair Scholarship at U of South Carolina.

I’m wondering how a young student is going to NET $20k per year to put towards college costs during his 4 years of college.

I can tell you this…the pre-med pre-reqs are the “weeder classes” so getting A’s in those classes will not allow you to work much during the school year. The semester that my son took OChem I, he only worked 4 hours per week…and that was on a FRIDAY, so it wouldn’t affect his school work (he knew that he’d not likely ever study on a Friday afternoon. When he took OChem II, he only worked about 6 hours per week…again, mostly on Fridays.

College is not like high school…especially if you’re pre-med. And, as a Bio-Chem major, you’ll be having demanding coursework all 4 years.

It’s none of my business where he’s getting his money, but it might be from an inheritance, a generous grandparent, an investment that paid off.
