So I checked out all the pictures from housing with single rooms. They are all ridiculously tiny. Not to complain or anything but... how does everyone plan on setting up their rooms? I just want to hear some thoughts before I make my packing list. I have a ton of stuff I want to bring but Im not sure how much will fit. Also, where are the bathroom doors usually at in the singles? The pictures I saw must have community bathrooms. In the community living thingy it says you can't put stuff less than two feet away from the radiator or windows... what's that about? can I put my bed up against the wall with the window? I think it would give me much more room.

here is a list of stuff I'm worried about squeezing into my room:

futon

trunk

small tv

microwave

microfridge

fish tank

a guitar or two and maybe an amp

some organizing bins

There are a few pictures of singles with private baths on this page, if you haven’t already seen them: [Singles | University Housing](<a href=“Michigan Housing”>http://www.housing.umich.edu/reshalls/gallery/singles)
I think room size depends a lot on the dorm you’re living in. I’ll be in West Quad, and doubles here are 15x19, meaning that singles should be about 143 square feet (assuming that singles are half the size of doubles). I’m pretty satisfied with this because it actually happens to be larger than my room at home. Also, I would recommend becoming a minimalist when it comes to organization. I’m not planning to bring nearly as much stuff as you: probably just under bed storage bins, a minifridge, and maybe a small bedside table (aside from the obvious essentials). A futon would probably take up way too much space, so I would consider leaving that one out. If you still find yourself needing more space, you could also consider lofting your bed, desk, and drawers.

I used to live in a South Quad single. It was 9x12 (= 108 sq ft). If you are bringing furniture, you pretty much have to do at least a half loft, and probably a full loft. Your list looks doable if you cram everything tightly and your trunk and/or bins end up in your closet. Fish tank is perhaps questionable because it’ll probably limit your vertical space.

I don’t know about the radiator/windows thing; might not have been an issue at SQuad.

Most singles average 8X14. And goBlueUM, most West Quad doubles are around 11X18 or 12X19. Very few are 15X19.

bluedevilsfan- Thanks for letting me know. The only person I talked to told me he had a 15x19 double in West Quad last year, and I assumed that all of a certain room type in one building would be identical. He must have been lucky then. My bad!

Thanks for all the replies! and thank you for those pics they actually helped a lot. I swear I was looking everywhere for that

My son had a single sophomore year. He half-stacked his bed against the window, kept the guitars/amps/keyboards beneath, fit the futon (small one) along the perpendicular wall to the window, had the desk across from it on the opposite wall with a tv-sized monitor that doubled for computer and dvd player. With his fridge and microwave and other misc. items, I don’t think he would have had room for a small aquarium unless it was perhaps on top of a book case.

Is your aquarium freshwater or salt water? You might find it a bit hard to maintain, esp. if marine, but where there’s a will, there’s a way ;)

My tank is a ten gallon freshwater. I planned on lofting and putting my bed against the window and putting my tank on the dresser and the futon against the far left wall.

It’s likely more viable to manage a small freshwater aquarium. I’d hesitate to try salt :)
