I've been told to apply... Skeptical, chances...

So, various people about school have told me to give an application to USC a shot, but I think my stats are a bit low...

3.15 Unweighted GPA

2140 SAT score

720 CR
660 M
760 W

4 out of 6 AP classes taken (one of the others is basically a redundant credit)

3 Years Varsity swimming/6th place in District Championship therein. 2 Years Varsity Tennis, 2 Years JV football

Editor of School paper/Writer for local paper.
1st Chair Saxophone in Symphonic Band

100+ hours of community service through my church, being Jury Foreman/Attorney in district youth court, and women's advocacy club.

Exchange student through GAPP (German-American Partnership Program.) Hosted student and later went to Germany.

TV spot writer for local television station. Liason between school and local businesses coordinating advertisements. Served as organizer for local bank fundraiser.

Began a 0 period Jazz band. (Though short lived, as band teacher was fired... Well resigned...)

Alright there they are.

What do ya think my chances are...
Thanks.

Everything looks pretty good; you’ve taken a demanding course load in the context of your school and you have some interesting extracurriculars. However, your GPA is extremely low for USC standards. I’m pretty sure most people who get into USC have a 3.8 Unweighted GPA or higher. Of course, there are exceptions that get in with lower, so you might have a chance, but I think it’s a fairly large reach. If you want to go to USC, though, you should still give it a shot! Good luck. :)

I think you could get in with a 3.5 GPA

3.15, I’m not sure about

Yes, that’s what I expected. Both the GPA and the SAT will be up by the end of the year, but ya it’s a long shot. Meh, it’s only 50 dollars… I’ll keep you appraised.

:)

How good of a swimmer are you?? If you are solid you can contact the USc swimming coach and tell him you want to be a walkon. He might be able to get you through admissions.

GPA is definitely low, but since you have good ECs and SAT you may be able to pull it off if you show USC that you’d really like to go there. I’d explain that you’ve taken almost all of the AP courses that your school offers. Your admission will also depend on which college within USC you’re applying to. Good luck.

@Taxi1113, alright, I can do that, I’ll see if I can contact the person in charge of undergraduate admissions and see if I can let him know. The reason I was interested in this school when people told me about it is that it seems to have a mix of academics/social things also.

I was going to shoot for journalism/or political science/or perhaps economics.

@CollegeManx: To be honest, I haven’t swam in about a year. Germany/Tennis/other things got in the way, I just started doing it again and am a bit rusty. I can’t say if I’ll be good enough for what you’re describing, but I’ll be able to give you a more accurate update in a few months. When would I have to ask the swimming director for a walk-on?

If you are applying for a major that will take your talent for television writing into account, then that talent may mitigate your lower GPA. So, journalism or TV majors would be good majors to put on the application. After all, not every musician or aspiring film major admitted to the school has a 3.8 unweighted GPA. If you are interested in walking on for swimming, then I suggest you contact the coach by phone at his/her USC office IF you have gone on the swimming website, looked at the times of USC swimmers, and see that your times (or past times) are comparable. Do not waste your time or the coach’s time if you are not competitive with the swimmers that are already on the roster. If you are competitive, the time to contact coaches is right now. Actually, you would be late so call immediately if you are planning to be a recruited walk-on. Not many schools find walk-ons by accident after the school year has begun. You can always see if you can be a student manager for a sports team if you find you do not have division-one level talent. That can SOMETIMES get you an edge in admissions at SOME schools. Good luck. Write a great essay and get good recommendations.
