Applying to…

1st choice

-Ohio State University at Columbus Campus (No.1) (submitted apps yesterday)

I'll be honest with you. Your ACT is within the range of the '07 class. In the absence of a very good ACT score, however, your class rank is really going to hurt you. I'd have to say that Ohio State would be a definite reach but not completely out of the question. Are you a first generation college student or a urm? Either of those could mitigate the class rank a bit.

My advice is to go ahead and apply. You're a long shot but not completely out of the realm of possibility. I would also definitely have either a backup school ready or be willing to accept the possibility of going to a branch campus. Are you an Ohio resident? If so, your act/class rank will probably get you into all of the other state schools.

Good. That will definitely be taken into consideration and might mitigate your low freshman gpa. The upward grade trend and AP classes will also help mitigate your overall class rank. I think you range from being on the fence to a decent shot, and the real deciding factor will probably be how strong the overall applicant pool is.

Get your application in as soon as possible. With rolling admissions, the longer you wait, the more difficult your chances. Good luck.

If you're an Ohioan, what's your preference between an Ohio State branch campus and one of the other state universities?

I think you have a shot, as sh60614 has said. Your grades are definitely going to be your biggest problem. Your ACT score is fine. The first generation and immigrant thing is a plus in your case: OSU is pretty homogeneous in terms of nationality and would love to spice things up. You're right at the point where the competition from other applicants is what's gonna make or break you.

strong essays (had about nine opinions on them)

Your grades are low, but your test scores rock. It suggests you don't try really hard in class. You better hope that OSU is more concerned with raising their stats profile with your test scores than worrying about the effort you seem to put into class.

i got a 30...there's a lot more to the reason why my grades are low, and its not like i didnt learn since im getting 4's on the AP tests, but i explained the issues in my special circumstances so hopefully it adds a little more understanding to the whole gpa issue.

Ummm I think you'll get in with no problem as long as you take the right step.

first of all...You are a minority and an immigrant...make sure in the essay you describe everything you went through as an immigrant..and take the essay seriously!

second...in your essay tell about you skipping 2nd semester and everything you went through there.

third...Its not like you are taking a bunch of easy classes and getting terrible grades...you are challanging yourself and doing pretty solid...im surprised with your rank..must be a competitive school.

I think it all relies on your essay at this point....
