Ivy application process (switching RD to EA)

Yes, I remember that we had some kind of ED glitch when my daughter applied in fall 2012…the college never received the guidance counselor’s document and it had to be resent. I am starting to see that each school seems to have a method to change RD to EA or ED, and that relying on the common app itself is probably iffy just because they have so many issues.

We did nescacs but I think it’s roughly the same. We submitted junior transcript and all available test scores that were required for all the schools where he was being recruited and had overnights. He had all the overnights before he submitted his application - however, prior to that, I know all the coaches had called the HS guidance office and had asked about our son to get general impressions etc.

I know all of the assistant coaches had at least talked with me for 10 minutes at summer camps to say hello and introduce themselves and again at overnight visits when we had tours and lunch, plus at least 30 minute meetings with head coaches at the end of the fall overnights. Still no application submitted.

When our son finally committed, he had 3 applications ready to go, with all supplemental essays done. Some glitch in the common app had not let him complete all his applications if he had even designated one “ED” so he completed all of them “RD.” When he committed, he sent in the one for his college but it was submitted - of course - RD - when it needed to be ED.

Obviously we called the college admissions office. At first we were just told to change the status within the Common App. Then we found out that once submitting an application, Common App would not let anything change the status of the app (or at least I was unable to figure this out). After a night of that we just called the college the next business day and explained - lots of Common App problems this year -and we were able to have the nice college admissions office send us the link for an ED agreement. It was signed, copied and returned to both guidance at school and the college and his application was neatly converted.

Sorry - I did a TL;DR - my son didn’t submit an application of any kind until late October. Football.

We are thinking about ED for an Ivy, and then ED II for a D3 school if he doesn’t get into the Ivy. His third choice would be a RD app, but the coach wants him so we feel that ED is unnecessary.

It is some kind of solace that he has this planned out somewhat as a junior, but there is a chance that other schools will come into play and muck up the scenario, which would be good and bad.
