Ivy/Harvard Aspirant (freshman)...

Hey there. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum; I'm not really looking to be chanced (I mean, come on, I'm a freshman), but I want some advice on what I can do to increase my chances of getting into the ivies. I posted here at the beginning of the school year, but a lot has changed and I'm curious if my chances are any different. Here's my little resume:

-4.0 GPA UW; ~95 avg; 1850 freshman SAT
-I'm on the chess team, green team, and I'm part of the community service club; I think I want to join the Jazz Band next year (I would have to drop one of my current clubs)
-I volunteer at my library once a week for three hours
-I'm going to be a co-president of the chess team next year and I'm trying to get a robotics team started for next year; besides that, I really don't have any leadership positions
-I took two six-week science courses at a well-known museum after school which met twice a week at the beginning of the school year and I'm looking into taking more classes next year
-I participated in the Science Olympiad this year
-I'm going to JHU's CTY program for 3 weeks this summer
-I MIGHT intern at a computer store this summer (still haven't gotten a reply from them yet)
-I'm in my school's band and I've performed at two school concerts so far
-I won first place at a small chess competition this year (but it's really not worth mentioning)
-I'm self-studying precalc right now

My hobbies include reading, playing piano, chess, and swimming. I love math and science and I want to pursue a job in the field(s). I'd love to get more involved in science and math and also improve my piano-playing and my chess skills. Regarding this post: call me ambitious, but college is something I'm very serious and passionate about. Please comment and give advice!

Thanks in advance.

bump…

it’s really too early to tell… ^^

maybe it’s the way you organize things right now, but as of now i looks like there’s a lot of breadth but not lots of depth. try depth?

I think you’re off to a good start. For starters, you have a very good SAT score for a freshman, but you’ll need to work on it a little more during your junior year - not to be brutally blunt, but your chances of getting into an Ivy, specifically Harvard, are pretty low unless you have probably a 2200+ SAT or a significant hook on your resume (are you a URM or forst-gen college student, for example?). In addition, you’re only a freshm,an, so it’s not that big of a deal that you don’t have many leadership positions. However, look for leadership oportunities in the future! Establish good relationships with club members and make sure you’re dedicated enough to be a viable candidate for leadership.

For a freshman, I think you look good! I have no idea what your school offers in terms of courses, but as you get older, I would recommend taking as many AP classes as you can REASONABLY HANDLE. Don’t go overboard and kill yourself, but if you’re aiming for an Ivy, they want to see that you’re taking the most challenging courseload available to you.

Good luck!

I didn’t have any EC/leadership until the summer after Sophomore year, so I wouldn’t really worry about it. You’re a Freshman. Don’t start freaking out quite yet.

You’re off to a good start, don’t mess it up :)

stop worrying.

@reesezpiecez103: I’m sure my SAT score will increase as I get older; I’m not really worried about it. Also, I have an older cousin who went to Harvard and he has donated a lot of money to the school. Even if this makes me a legacy student (how is the terminology used?), I’m not going to solely rely on it.

Thanks, guys!
