Ivy League?

Hello,

I am currently a male sophomore at a public school. I was wondering what colleges I should be aiming for (or if it’s too early to determine) or just some advice in general.

1460 PSAT Score

Unweighted GPA: 3.6 I know, its bad
Weighted GPA: 4.0

Only taking AP Bio and AP Chinese this year
Next Year: AP Chem, AP USH, AP Calc AB, AP English

US National Cadet B Team (table tennis)
Ranked 17th in the US for under 15 and under (table tennis)
Played Chinese flute in an orchestra
Performed with Chinese National Traditional Orchestra
Performing concerto next year in China and Japan
Part of Red Cross Club, Medical Students of Bay Area (MSBA) Club
Attended Rosetta Institute for Biomedical Studies last summer

I was just wondering if my ECs are too broad and if they do not really support my application. I don’t know how/if playing flute will help me get into a good pre-med program of something along those lines. I really need to know what I should improve on

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

GPA is low for the ivies and without an actual SAT or ACT score it would be hard to give an opinion on your chances. . Imo with a sub 3.7 GPA one would need around a 1550+ on the SAT to even have a chance at the ivies (especially if you are asian). What is your rank at school?

In my opinion, freshman year gpa and PSAT scores indicate little to nothing about someone as people can improve a lot or give up entirely. Your EC’s look pretty interesting. Instrumental EC’s, however, are deceptive because they are so common. It won’t end up meaning as much you would think unless you’re like a soloist at Carnegie Hall. Make sure you get some kind of research in over the summer or do some hospital work; it really adds a lot of focus to your application as a whole as a future doctor. Also, try getting an officer position in some of the medical focused clubs at your school. You might wanna consider getting recruited for table tennis if you’re good enough. It’s an easiest way (assuming you’re amazing) to get into a good college and potential scholarships.

If you can get like a 3.9-4 gpa junior and the 75th percentile test score for whatever college you want to go to the most, I’d say you have a pretty good shot. Keep in mind that Ivy’s and other amazing schools are relatively unpredictable anyway. If you want an Ivy no matter what, you’re best chances are at Cornell in CALS.

If you’re absolutely sure you want to do pre-med, you might want to consider a 7 year program. However, I know a lot of people who realized too late they they hated medicine and had to drop :frowning:

That’s my two cents. Good Luck! :)>-
