"General Ranking" - "C" might have been accurate 20 years ago, but no longer; I believe JMU is an up-and-coming place- give it a "B" also.

Binghamton has a good reputation in the New York City area. Neither school has great name recognition nationally, but Binghamton is well respected in the northeast. I would say that of the two it definitely has better students. However, many people say the campus is boring and cold. For pure academics though Binghamton should be the choice.

Congratulations on JMU acceptance. Since you are from Beijing, have you considered the racial diversity of JMU vs Bing? For your consideration.

JMU Asian American 5%
Bing Asian American 19%

In your situation, I would probably choose Binghamton. It has a better reputation in the business/finance heart of the country. Also -- since it sounds like academics and career opportunities are more important to you than things like outdoor life and school spirit -- I think it matters that Binghamton is a state flagship and that JMU is often (not always!) viewed as the third- or fourth-choice option in its state.

OK.I got it.It seems that Binghamton is better in general..
Wow,hope I can be accepted!!!!!!!GOD BLESS ME,HAHA~

Go to Binghamton. I visited and loved it..it's a great place to be. The staff is friendly and supportive. The school is also very work hard, play hard. A Binghamton Education is WELL-RESPECTED and to some respects, Binghamton is considered a "Public Ivy". When I visited Binghamton, some students that were helping the staff in directing us for the day were like "Man, i didn't study at all today, I have to study tomorrow, but I was supposed to do it today."- This goes to show you that students there want to learn and that academics are no joke. Also, getting into Binghamton is not easy. Binghamton was my first choice but I got accepted to Cornell. YOU WILL NOT BE SHORTCHANGED AT BINGHAMTON.

James Madison, as was already said, is barely known. The only reason I even heard about James Madison before reading this post is because one of my junior year teachers graduated there. He said it himself, "Going to James Madison is not going to open more doors for you than would attending a more prestigious university", and since Binghamton is more prestigious, there you go!

Oh,yeah.SUNY system is more well-known in my country so if I guess if I leave America I can find a good job more easily. But why do many people say that Binghamton has a boring campas and the city sucks. In addition, i don't like the cold weather because Beijing is too cold and i like tropical place hehe...

I have barely heard of Binghamton.

JMU isn't necessarily better, just telling you that SUNY is not that well known down South.

It is definitely colder up there than at JMU, but JMU is not tropical...

JMU is definitely the 4th ranked school in Virginia, but it's still a good school.

Yes, the area outside of Binghamto nUniversity is very boring. They do have at least one mall, a hairsalons and a couple of Bars. However, Binghamton has many things to do. For instance, Late Nite Binghamton, which has events at least every thursday (it may be every thursday, friday and saturday ntie) that include but are not limited to kareoke, game nite and so many other things that I have forgotten. Binghamton also has opportunities to have ur tuition paid for after freshman year. Note that The cost for Late Nite Binghamton events is included in the cost of Binghamton.

Also, in U.S New Ranks Binghamton is in the FIrst Tier and I also beleive it is the number 5 best public school. I don't know if James Madison is in the first tier but I don't believe it is. Additionally, BInghamton was named the number one Public Value School in the country for outside students!

A couple of years ago, JMU was ranked as the number 1 u in the south by US News. I can't remember the category. I think it was the universities whose highest degree was a masters.

TO namtrag :Do you mean that"the 4th ranked school in Virginia" is "JMU is top 4 in virginia"???Somebody told me JMU has a similiar reputation with Virginia Tech, or maybe just a little bit worse.
P.S. JMU does got a top 2 in US NEWS rank "master's universities in South". So i applied it.
TO SexyLikeAScorpio:yeah, i know Binghamton is valuable with a resonable price, that is why i chose it.I believe it offers solid education. Is Binghamton a city in NY state? Why does it only get a few malls and other utilities?

Yes, similar to Tech, a little lower. No engineering school at JMU.

But 3rd/4th in Va. is really good. Better than 1st in many states.

JMU, is arguably as good as VT. VT is the school to go to for engineering, although they have other very good programs. VT is larger than JMU. JMU focuses on the undergraduate, as it is not as research focused as other large publics with graduate programs. This is what makes the school so wonderful for the undergaduate, IMO. I recently read that JMU will be beginning an engineering program, I believe in 2008. For engineering, I would still go to VT. Namtrag is correct that 3rd or 4th in VA is still really good, and better than 1st in some other states. You need to remember that VA has excellent public universities.

Binghamton is in upstate New York and yes it is a city. Upstate NY is very different from NYC, it has less to do but it tends to have better schools.

yeah, virginia has many good public schools and many presidents of usa in history, haha~

upstate in new york state~so does it mean it is colder than NYC?!gosh~

None since Woodrow Wilson, though, as I recall.

If you like freezing your butt off, go to Binghamton! hahaha

Seriously, both schools would be excellent for you.

But i wanna know something bad about Binghamton univ~~

Post on the individual colleges section in the Binghamtom threads, you might get more help

Well, i've accepted by both of the colleges now. I'm really exciting !!!
My mom wanna me to attend to SUNY Binghamton. However, i am still not clear about the business education from the two colleges.
If we rank James madison university into US News national university rankings how will you rank it?
Only compare the education, which college is better???
