January 2010 - US History Review Thread

@ Gatitaz, some scandels during Grant’s presidency were, Credit Mobilier and the Whiskey Ring- kind of difficult to explain but google has a bunch of stuff on them

GUYS, LESS THAN A WEEK TIL TEST, lets shift this discussion into overdrive. Everyone, start posting questions of every category!!!

Heh, I just took a Sparknotes test and got a 700. I just hope that Sparknotes is harder than the real test, like most people say. Now, I’ll just concentrate on my weak points and take the official practice test. I hope I get a 750+!
I should work on the time-line tomorrow, since i don’t have much work on this week’s busy schedule. ^_^

ya this is the worst timing to take the history test cause i have finals all this week… but Great moments are born from great opportunities

Can anyone explain difference between Populists and Progressives?

For starters, the Populists — characterized by farmers’ rights, a graduated income tax, and direct election of senators — emerged due to agrarian discontent at the end of the 1800s. “Progressive” was first a term coined for those involved in the rise of Progressive Movement between about 1890 and 1910. Progressives reformed the political process by placing limits on campaign finances and advocating for direct election of senators, just like the Populists. Later on, a branch of the Democratic party split into the Progressive Democrats to push for more liberal legislation as a Republican president rose to power.

Please correct me if I’m wrong; I just wrote that off the top of my head.

Well, a lot of populist ideals were adopted into the two parties such as Australian ballots etc. but never the silver coining which was the big thing of Bryan and the Populists who were made up of debt-ridden farmers who thought inflation would help

Back from testing! Wasn’t really as hard as I expected it would be. Hope I did good enough, and good luck guys!
