Deftech is quite good! I like them.

I'm Japanese

1.DefTech
2.haru07

Only three yet? That's pathetic...

Anyway, why did you all decided to attend American colleges when you can have good or sometimes even better education in Japan?

I'm not Japanese.... But I think it is probably because there's only one Tokyo University in Japan, and there are 20 or so colleges of Tokyo U's caliber in America. You just have more chance to get a top-notch education.

Also, America colleges might be stronger in some specific areas... You also have an English language education, which I think is pretty important considering the dominant status of English as a language now.

How did you get to know about University of Tokyo if you are not from Japan? Is it well-known in other countries, too?

^......Hehe....that was the most easiest part......just take a look at the THES(Times Higher Education Supplement) world universities rankings........
Tokyo University ranks 19 this yr...and then Kyoto University ranks 29.....
Btw,greetings to evryone here!!!!!......(I m not japanese though..)

Im also gonna apply for Keio University, how about you guy? are you gonna apply for Japanese universities?

I have thought about applying to the University of Tokyo, but then it was too late when I found out that I had to take the entrance exams to get in, which was like, in November or December, maybe?

DefTech,

We may be gaijin, but we're not all idiots... Todai is well-known worldwide.

And having gone to a Japanese university for some time (Tsukuba 筑波大学), and being pretty savvy about Japanese tertiary schooling, I can say with some authority that it's VERY hard to get an American top 25 level education in Japan. Maybe Todai, maybe Kyodai...and that's about it. Keio, for some things.

I mean, all my friends at Kyodai, Todai, and Waseda just goof off and play baduminton or go to izakaya... it's not a very academic atmosphere there.

yeah,, I agree. Universities in Japan are like other Asian universites: hard to get in but easy to get out. As a result, universitiy students do not focus on their studies. That is also why Im applying for US universities.

I asked to about 15 Americans, and none of them knew about the University of Tokyo. That's RIDIC.

I don't know any Americans who haven't at least heard of Todai. What age and educational level were these 15 Americans?

Average Americans are not famous for knowing a lot about other countries...

Regardless, Tokyo University is going to be known at least in passing by the vast majority of well-educated Americans.

Kyo7, do you think the average Japanese is really any better? Having lived in both urban and rural Japan, I find that most Japanese aren't exactly rockin' the geography quiz...

Some would argue that Waseda could be included alongside Keio, Tokyo and Kyoto. However, I don't know too much about any of them.

me tooo WWWWWWWWWWWW

memememememe too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any1 applying for school right now???

well,, I have been admitted to Keio University, but I applied as a Japanese student studying abroad, and the application process is very similar to that of US colleges. i.e. I did not sit the exam.

If you have any questions about Japanese universities admissions as a returnee, I may be able to help.

Hey I am an international and wants to go to University of Tokyo for a master. I would be heading to Imperial College, UK for a BSc in Maths.

How much Japanese must I know to be offered a place there? I know it is the most difficult university to get into an Japan and certainly very very hard for Japanese to get in. But I am also aware that most Asian universities now are very concern about internationalising their student population and this would effectively mean more advetrising and slacker entry standards for internationals.

I believe that the education at Todai is top-notch. My focus would be:
1. Do you think Todai would lower the entrance requiremnts for internationals?
2. How much Japanese do I need to know? Are the lectures (eg. Business, mathematics...)

Thanks!
