Jazz programs out west?

Son's a well rounded blues and jazz player. Would like to attend school out on the west coast. We're aware of Cal, USC and UCLA, of course, but are considering smaller schools that might have more hands on experience with better teacher access. Any suggestions, large or small, thanks

what instrument?

sorry, guitar.

You might also take a look at University of the Pacific, Dave Brubeck's alma mater. It has an undergrad conservatory and offers a jazz major.

Someone who used to post on here had a son who played jazz trumpet and was very happy with the program at the University of Redlands.

Also, though UCLA is large, it limits its music classes to majors in the College of Arts and Architecture and therefore keeps them small. (My daughter was an art major there and her studio classes, for example, were not larger than 17). So, I wouldn't assume he would not get access and attention there without talking to some students.

Hi,
Yes son is very happy at Redlands. He is a BM major, they do not have a jazz major/ He is very happy with the jazz experience he is getting at Redlands. The new dean is a brass player but he is working on expanding the opera program. I don't know what that means for the future. I am sure you will get an answer if you post on the Redlands site on CC with questions.
The Cal States have some jazz programs with great reputations. Ck into Long Beach, Fullerton and Northridge. Big Bad Voodo Daddy has northridge alumni. Son only applied to Long Beach and received a merit award, he felt Redlands suited him better. I don't know how the cal states decide who will be your instructor or if they use TA's. Son was happy with the guy he would have at CSULB but I don't remember. Several of the UC and CSU instructors seem to travel up and down the state teaching. Fullerton has a day (or they did) where they invite HS students to ck out the program. I found out about it the day it ocurred but a professor returned my phone call-they seem very nice.

thanks guys. Will be visiting UOP next week, going dwn south next month. Anyone with a good experience up north, SF, Oregon, Wash ? thanks again

If you are looking at UCs, you might throw UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz into the mix. UCSD is known for computer music and composing, but I know a couple of jazz kids who had good experiences there. UCSC would make for a lovely visit (gorgeous campus) and has a lot of music, though I don't know about it specifically for jazz. I do know someone who did a PhD in Latin Music there and that there is a music center in town that draws a lot of touring jazz artists.

Sorry, don't know any music kids who headed to the Northwest, though there are some great colleges up there that draw students for other reasons.

The music program at UCSC integrates music performance, theory, composition, and history and literature, offering students many possibilities for individual growth in its unusually diverse curriculum. The undergraduate program offers the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Music (BM) degrees, as well as a Minor in Music, an Electronic Music Minor, and a Jazz Minor. http://music.ucsc.edu/

The UCSC music curriculum is distinctive in developing musicians who integrate scholarship with performance. Although this rigorous program primarily addresses Western music, it also incorporates the study of world music cultures in both their art and vernacular traditions. A major in music establishes a substantial foundation for further academic or performance studies. Two undergraduate majors are offered: the bachelor of music, which especially develops the student’s attainment in performance, and the bachelor of arts, which cultivates greater breadth in the student’s academic achievement. Three minors in music are also offered: a general one in music, one in electronic music, and one in jazz. The electronic music and jazz minors are open to music majors, as well as to students with other majors.

thanks again to everyone

Gsp..-great list
We were just at the Monterey Jazz Festival. One of the Jazz or music magazines had an article about Jazz colleges. I don't think it was Jazz times - Tony Bennet was on the cover. I didn't get a chance to pick up the magazine but hope to get it. A man in front of me had it.
