Jewish students as URM?

Does anybody know of any colleges where a Jewish applicant would be considered URM?

Community college?

Girl Geek:

My son is 1/2 jewish. As I am sure you know, jews, like asians, are considered “over-represented” (I hate that word) at many schools. For example, I have heard that Emory is about 25% jewish, even though jews make up only 3% of the population.

That being said, I have read that some schools are actually looking to attract more jews.
My memory has faded, but Texas Christian University and Southern Methodist University come to mind.

And I presume that if you apply to colleges in states where there are probably not a lot of jews, being jewish might be considered a plus from a diversity standpoint (such as a University of Nebraska or a University of Idaho) (even this is stereotyping)

I am a notary, and once married a couple in a small town in Central Florida, and when they found out I was a jew, they commented “wow…this will make a really interesting story, that we were married by a jew” (their language being no different in tone than if they said they had been married by a “martian”). And an old girlfriend of mine (jewish) once told me that a guy once asked her if he could see her “horns” (as in horns in her head). But hopefully, such attitudes are fading from the scene.

I don’t think playing the “jewish” angle is worth your time. Hopefully, your stats are good enough that you don’t need such a “hook”. I doubt there are many top schools out there where jews are “under-represented”.

And would you really want to earn an admissions spot to a college knowing that they took you simply because they wanted more jews?

Probably check out Brigham Young in Utah, Oral Roberts University(sp?) sounds like a dentistry school but I think Michele Bachman went there for her JD), Notre Dame, maybe Morehouse, Baylor (I think it’s in Texas)

Brigham Young University, Oral Roberts, the Jerry Falwell school?

Duke, Notre Dame?

OK, Jewish is a RELIGION. seriously. it doesn’t have to do with race

^^^

 1. Judaism is a cultural and/or religious identity.

URM=underrepresented minority and does not always have to do with race. For instance, Hispanic is an ethnicity and Hispanics can be/are of any race(s).

Stress:

When a person says he is jewish, he is not really talking about religion. Most jews I know are not religious. When a jewish mother says that she wants her son to marry a jewish girl, she does not mean Christie Brinkley, even if she converts to Judaism.

^ true. I actually have about 10 Jewish friends(my mother was Jewish…making me Jewish as well) and all of us are only Jewish because we were BORN Jewish. Not because we practice Judaism as a religion. A lot of American Jews observe no religious practices. If you are still confused, because yes, it can be rather complicated, I usually refer most people to Judaism for Dummies. Laugh if you wish, but it does a good job of explaining that we are descendants of a tribe that passes the ethnic identity on through the maternal line. So yes, it is a “race”, with a unique cultural identity and history.
