JHU or Ivy League

Though I will not get into the debate about JHU versus Harvard, I will just add two things. I personally know a number of students (7 that come to mind right away) that turned down Harvard to go to JHU. So don't think there aren't students who make that choice.

Second, the schools are very different. You should visit and compare the location, the size, the students, the opportunities for undergrads, etc.

Luckily you are choosing between two fantastic schools.

Well, you've eliminated Williams but remain interested in JHU so I'm guessing you have few interests beyond the library. You will find like minded students at Columbia and Harvard but I caution that these schools also have some students intent on enjoying life. To be absolutely safe you might want to just stick with JHU.

Well, I'll just point one thing out and leave. On most University choice threads, people pick their fave, generally the page they hang out on. So at the Yale forum posters will tell you how awesome Yale is. On this forum however, half the people reccommended going to Harvard.

My best advice is to check out all the schools before deciding. I visited Harvard and it was boring. (Well, everyone was gone for christmas break but still) NYC is my favorite city in the world, its so exciting and alive. Still I've never even seen Columbia. The only time I saw JHU was when our train went past it. It was pretty cool.

Well, now that I glance back over this thing I just wrote I realize it is really pointless. Oh well, I would kill to be in your situation next year. (I'm a junior) Good luck with your decision anyways.

Wow, this is an interesting topic. You have to come back to tell us which school you pick!!! Anyway, I don't have much to add except that I think JHU is the best one :) But really, what kind of social/educational environment do you want?

Isn't harvard the best school? It has grade inflation, which is good for medical school and it also has the best reputation. JHU has grade deflation.

ok
theonlyone
i've looked at all your previous posts and it's pretty obvious you're trying to dissuade people from coming to hopkins just cause you're on the waitlist...
cmon man, that's really low

hahaha, theonlyone, that is really low...

but i guess, if it works, go for it.

grade inflation isnt always best. med schools take into account how tough hopkins is and give a little gpa leeway for hopkins students.

if u go to JHUover Harvard, JHU med school should clone you and spread around USA for next 20 years. When u die they should freeze or create wax statute for JHU PR . get the drift.

but does the average employer care about grade deflation? a 3.2, even from an amazing school, might not look as attractive on a resume as a 3.7-3.8 from a grade inflated school.

harvard of course

The average overall GPA last semester for all majors was like a 3.4 (the average engineering GPA was even a 3.35 and the average humanities major was a 3.5). With averarge GPAs that high I don't think you can say Hopkins has grade deflation as a 3.4 is quite good in the eyes of grad/med school.

for real? is there a website that has that ?

also, is there a website that gives the Mean grade for each course ... i kno alot of colleges publish that.

There is no website that I know of that publishes this data or the mean grade for each course. The GPA statistics are published each semester by the Registrar's Office. If you come visit Hopkins stop by the registrar and ask to see a transcript guide if you don't believe me. Its a green booklet that outlines the range of GPA for each type of major, and I think you will find that they are much higher than expected.

by any chance could you post as much as possible from that stastitics sheet if you have it... unfortunately i alreayd visited hopkins, but id really like to get this.... you think if i call them up they would mail it to me?

asdonasnodnodsa

JHU with grade deflation or Harvard with grade inflation???

Tough choice...wait no it isn't lol.

Harvard:
1. world-class faculty in comparison to JHU(multiple noble laureates+Rhodes scholars)
2. MUCH wider course offerings than JHU(you can switch to underwater basket weaving if your little heart desires so;))
3. better med school that JHU(#1 in the world in fact)
4. better math offerings than JHU(Math 55 is #1 undergrad math class in the country)
5. MASSIVE endowment and plethora of research opportunities($10 billion plus if I remember correctly)
6. over 350 clubs/organization/sports teams, etc. to join in and boasts the greatest number of extracurricular activities as compared to any other college(JHU included)
7. Princeton Review-"dorms like palaces"(need I say more?)
8. Boston vs. Baltimore(historical treasures vs. urban ghettos)

Choose Harvard now and never turn back.:)

thanks for the advice evil, but i chose Harvard a few days ago...

Such a luxurious choice
o man o man i hate you :(

The US News ratings for med schools are meaningless, but it is true that Hopkins, Harvard and Mayo are all at the top.
