JHU, UMD college park or University of Toronto?

I started going to jhu in the fall and left halfway for medical reasons. I did not complete the hole semester. In all honesty, despite the amazing academics, I thought Hopkins was way too intense - students only ever talked about work etc.

I didn't apply for finaid at the time because I was international but I now have a green card and I am a MD resident. I am planning on doing biology/psychology premed an then going on to medical school.

I was wondering, if jhu was 60000 a year (and I did apply for admission to UMD) what should I consider? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some points to consider:
-umd ill cost 20000 vs Hopkins costing 60000
-Hopkins is highly ranked and recognized so I have a very hard time giving up this status and I must admit I like people assuming I'm smart etc because I go there (superficial, yes, but I am facing a difficult period)
-Hopkins was small and I hated the location, I thought the students were annoying and egocentric
-umds size seems overwhelming but I guess since I live close to do it'll be comforting?
-rec letters will be harder to get from teachers at umd for med school, as well as research opps
-I think umd is less competitive, which could give me a confidence boost if I feel like I am doing well in my classes

I may be highly mistaken with a lot of what I said. So by all means, call me out. I am so stuck. I just don't know what to do.

I also have a further option of studying in at the u of toronto for 15000 a year or so, (world bank pays 75 percent college tuition abroad) but I don't know if I'll get accepted nor do I know if I want to go to to toronto and do premed and bio there....

Anyone have advice?

You’re not cut out to be a doctor! Go back to Hopkins and study what interests you other than pre-med.

Excuse me what do you mean I’m not cut out to be a doctor? I got A’s in all my exams, academically it was challenging, by intense I mean the kids had nothing else to ever talk about!

If you can put up with what is typical of college students, how are you going to handle yourself in the medical profession? What will med schools think about your medical leave? Don’t expect any big improvement if you do pre-med elsewhere.

I left for a medical leave because I was having constant seizures that were disrupting just about everything… Medical schools wouldn’t think poorly of me for leaving uni for that lol

I can handle what is typical of college students, I worded that wrong. But I would prefer to make friends with people interested in other things too?

Also this video scared me ****less (re: UMD) - [I'm</a> Shmacked The Movie : University of Maryland - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

I don’t think you will grow as a person at UMD as much as you would at a different university, because the stats you need to get into JHU will be much higher than those from the kids at UMD and the overconfidence you’ll have will leave you feeling understimulated. You applied late so you won’t get into honors. Are those your only three options?

Since you’ve asked, I can advise that the downtown campus of the University
of Toronto offers a fine education, and has an excellent medical program.
(I’m a UofT grad, as is my father, who taught at its Medical School.)
Actually, the UofT is an excellent school pretty much all around.

That said, I can’t speak to the ‘satellite’ campuses (campi?), tho’
my impression is/was that they’re not on par with the main campus.

Can you afford the 60k a year AND how much medical school will cost?

If not you might want to save money and go to UMD

Thanks everyone for the messages. Also, just to clarify - intense meaning general attitudes not the workload. Workload was fine, and regardless of what posters say I’m going to pursue medicine - to judge me on an opening post as to whether or not I can be a doctor is funny :)

“umd ill cost 20000 vs Hopkins costing 60000”

Will you have to take loans or are your parents paying it out of pocket ?

Either way you should not spend much on your undergrad if you are deadset on a medicine career. JHU is better than UMD no doubt about it but 40k per year more is too high. Go with Maryland.

No paying out of pocket. I’ve decided to go to UMD (decisions aren’t out yet, so i’m assuming i’m going to get in…) but unfortunately since I applied late I won’t be going honors, I know that for sure.

As far as schools abroad, I have U Melbourne in austrlia and St Andrews open as options. They would be very very cheap but I understand med schools don’t like foreign degrees, although I do have a greencard…

UMCP is definitely a very solid school and considering your distastes for John Hopkins…no matter how amazing the college is…and the financial gap between JH and UMCP…UMCP might be a better choice.

Location: UMCP is near Washington DC…what’s bad about that? The campus is beautiful and seems to be more like a college “experience.” Good sports…if you care at all? More things to probably search for and learn. JH is definitely a prestigious and amazing college…no doubt…but what’s the point when it costs too much and you don’t feel comfortable and you might be doing bad academically.

Hope that helps!

Definitely! How difficult is it to get good grades at UMD? I have ADD and I much prefer smaller classroom environments or lectures where a lot of the work is coursework… are the general chem/bio/physics classes going to be hard for me (not material wise)?

I’m pretty sure you will get great grades…considering that you were accepted to Johns Hopkins which means you have a great caliber for academics. Probably a lot easier than Johns Hopkins but still a great school. I;m hoping to apply to UMCP and get in as well as U Toronto. I don’t know TOO much about Toronto but it is ranked well in the world and great school.

Did you visit the campus ? Are you familiar with how safe UMD-CP is ? The campus is but the area, not so much.

You may also want to investigate other universities/colleges that have early admission assurance to med schools.
