"@Stevenspr I am just saying I don’t think you made a case for JHU being “markedly better.” I stand by my comment that the OP will be lucky to get either one. I’m not knocking Hopkins. I see JHU at #3 in Research Med Schools and #27 for primary care in USN. Penn is at #5 and #8. JHU is also a smaller medical program, and a much smaller endowment. How did you conclude it is markedly better? It may be. It just isn’t obvious to me.
@stevensPR For undergrad, the relevant factor is that the JHU hospital is not near the undergrad campus while the Penn hospital is right on campus and has plenty of opportunities available to undergrads. Also the difference between the strength of the Penn medical school & hospital and JHU is small. The JHU name in medical circles is sure more renowned (it is only eclipsed by Harvard), but at this level the practical difference from the added prestige is minimal, in terms of actually quality they are both powerhouses, consistently considered amongst top 4-5 in the country.
Now Penn as a university is stronger in slightly more fields across the board and is a considerably richer school both on an absolute and per student basis. It also has an undergrad program that is seen as stronger and more desirable. Just look at the RD yield rate for JHU, it is around 28-29%. The Penn RD yield is around 50%.
