Hey guys I have a question, but first congrats on getting into JMU and hope to see you there. VTech was my top choice and they waitlisted me, Madison was a close 2nd and i was accepted. I don't know as much about JMU as Tech so I was wondering what made you want to go to JMU?

Great academics, wide variety of majors, great school spirit, beautiful campus (love the mountains), friendly students (I have already received tweets from current students I do not know congratulating me and welcoming me to the Duke family), smaller class sizes than VT, professors with a focus on teaching / research secondary, great food, active community on weekends, women outnumber men and cool study abroad opportunites. That is my basic list for now. Congratulations again.

@booboo96 Those are all good reasons, thank you. I’m 95% certain i’ll attend. Hopefully i’ll see you there.

Food is #2 in the nation
I felt that “I want to spend my next 4 years here” feeling
Awesome school spirit
Great academics
Absolutely gorgeous campus
The people are so nice!
Not a commuter campus
There’s always something to do
I hope you love JMU as much as I do and hope to attend!

My son loves the feeling of community at JMU and how friendly everyone is, as well as the variety of activities to choose from. There is also lot of school spirit, and he loves the food. Dorms are nicer at JMU, too. Academically, as another poster noted, classes are smaller at JMU than at Tech and are all taught by professors, whereas Tech uses teaching/grad assistants a lot. Tech also teaches some of their math classes at a computer emporium, where students learn at their own pace – basically on-line learning, which kind of defeats the purpose of living on a campus. My daughter got into both Tech and JMU and is choosing JMU for all the reasons I’m discussing here. Also, JMU focuses a lot more on undergraduates in all areas, including having a much better freshmen orientation and housing freshmen all together in the same dorms, which helps build camaraderie and helps people make friends quickly. At Tech, they have floors with both freshmen and sophomores on them. The sophomores already have their friends, so that causes there to be less bonding on freshmen halls, and some freshmen have a harder time making friends as a result.
