Job During the School year?

So I already got my job and was wondering if I should keep it.

Ppl there really want me to work during the school year plus I love my job.

Always, College is coming soon. Was wondering if you guys had any experiences with my prob.

Is it wise to keep working or should I just focus on school? I planning to go pre-med and rush this fall. Dunno bout other my activities. I know studies is my number 1 propriety.

my job is 40 min from my college

Any opinions would be helpful "p

Thxs

I would focus on school and not work.

40 minutes is quite a drive for a job during the school year. Try to find something on campus or close to campus if you want to work during the school year and still have an on-campus weekend life and work during the week. Otherwise you'll waste 80 minutes a day driving to and from work when you could be studying or hanging out.

Im guessing your going to be a freshman? I'd say drop the job, 40 minutes is way too long of a drive. Hell I wouldn't work at a place 10 minutes from campus.

40 minutes is pretty far. see if you can get work on or near campus.

What kind of job is it? It really depends on what you're doing, but you might be able to set up something flexible (and I mean extremely flexible) for during the school year, where you could drop in on weekends/breaks without too much advanced notice. Otherwise, just cut it off, find a campus job for during the school year, and they should take you back next summer.

I think it depends entirely on the person, the academic rigor of your courses/school, and your other commitments. Pre-med is hard enough for most people, and rushing is /really/ time consuming at most schools. I think you probably have enough on your plate as it is. At the very least, you should wait until the fall semester is over, and decide then. If you haven't found a better job closer to campus, your previous employer will probably rehire you if you left on good terms.

a job 40 minutes away would not be a good idea.

I agree with srcameron. I would take it easy your first semester/year, college is a completely different animal than high school. Pre-med students tend to take very competitive classes that can be time consuming, and rushing a fraternity certainly will take up some more of your time. Gauge how your first semester goes, then decide from there.

Also, how many hours are you planning on working per week? I know quite a few people who have internships that take an hour or so to get to, but only go there once or twice a week. I think anything over twice to three times a week would be overkill.

just wondering, when did you get this job? was it recent? and how much do you get paid per hour?

Held a job for the entire duration of freshman year. Don't plan on deviating anytime soon. Money is a must.

Thxs everybody.

I got the job this summer and get paid 2.50 an hour plus tips. So you can guess that Im a waiter. Its a great paying job. I made tons of money since its an experience restaurant..So tips are really high sometimes.

Anyways, I can go back anytime I want to according to the owner and manager. So I guess its all good.

I decide that I might quit and rejoin later on.

Good choice. 1 hr 20 minutes is a long time to spend commuting to and from a job. From what my friends have said, being in a frat/sororiety is a big commitment, so I'd stick with that and schoolwork. The job will be there later.

huh? $2.50?... Do you live in Michigan? Is that min. wage?

if you work as a waiter/waitress (or any job w/ significant tips) minimum wage is lowered for you. there is a bottom limit, but it's often lower than the standard minimum wage. it's that way in several, if not all, states.

mainly because if you're doing a decent job, you'll be making at least "standard" minimum wage in tips anyway

servers here make $2.13 an hour.

I made $3.30 as a waitress. But that might have been the restaurant and not the state minimum.

yeah Servers get lower than the min wage since we get tips. The tips usually compensate the remaining amount. Like sometimes I get 100+ (a good day) for working 5 hours so if you do the math...I get like 22.50/hr that night.

Thxs,, I live in MS not MI.. I was a wolverine fan back in the day :p
